Straits of devestation from Gendarran Fields
I don’t see how that could be possible, you can’t even get to Bloodtide Coast from Gendarran Fields without going through LA.
You might have seen this http://gw2cartographers.com/ it’s not perfect but I use it to get a ‘bigger picture’ of the whole place.

This is the best world map I have found so far:
http://www.guildhead.com/map#z:5;c:-1.142578125,9.7064208984375
You can zoom out or in enough to see where most of the map connection paths are located.
However, some are under mountains, water, and I found one inside a building …
PS. You can toggle on/off the various map elements …
You can get between the two maps, but you have to progress the storyline until you become a commander of the Pact, and you must be a member of the Vigil. There is a private Asura gate that connects the Vigil Headquarters to Fort Trinity.
That is probably what was meant by what you read.
Note that the other orders also have their own private Asura gates between their headquarters and Fort Trinity.
@ Sarisa, the moment it unlocks is not as you describe.
you get commander at level 52 (forging the pact), but the portals keep closed then, only after lvl 60 (Battle for frot Trinity) Fort trinity is open for visitors and you can use the portal
To the OP, In the north-east corner of the Gendarran fields is an asura portal. It leads to the Straits of Devestation, but you are not allowed access till a certain point in the personal story. By that time you will also have ‘walked’ to there, so it is not a way to unlock the access early.

To ad at Sarisa’s post. Yes, you can travel between the two zones via the asura portals, but only after you actually reached Straits of Devastation by foot and unlocked the asura gates.
Edit: ninja’d.
Also, the mentioned Asura gates are currently only one-way. I’m not sure if this is intentional or a bug, but you can only go from Fort Trinity to any one of the order HQs; you can't make the reverse journey.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Thanks,m that makes more sense then we walking around the south wall trying to find some secret passage
Last I used it, the Priory gate worked in both directions.
All 3 routes work both ways. I checked this yesterday evening.

It doesn’t work both ways for me, or atleast not always. I have after I did the level 70 personal story quest, always been able to go from Fort Trinity to whatever portal, but not always the other way around. I only finished it a few days ago, so not sure what the reasons are, but for example yesterday I was helping some of my guilds on their secondary toon in lornar pass and in exchange they where getting on their main to help me with my lvl 75 story. The guard at the durmand priory wouldn’t let me pass. I had the same issue in chantry of whispers. But I also had times it did work. I am planning to test this further, but I think it has to dowith when I’m in the party with people in the same area who aren’t allowed in yet.

To add further explanation to my previous post: I checked yesterday to see if I can travel from FT to VK, then went back, went to CoW, then back, then to DP, and back. I never actually exited the enclosed zones with the portals and didn’t request access back from the gate keepers. So, here I admit I’m in the dark, I just assumed they would allow access no question asked.
