Hello everyone! Hope all is well.

I’m here to post a rather unusual post that i’m sure will confuse most of you (it even confuses me to some extent). Before I continue, I apologize if this post is under the wrong section. I figured that considering I require help from other players (advice), this is the best area for it.

I will attempt to make this as brief as possible to avoid any misunderstandings.

I have this mentality that if I encounter a glitch (and by glitch I mean anything that isn’t “perfect”) I must restart my character regardless of the level and start again. Believe it or not, I fear gaining both an advantage over other players and exceeding the boundaries that should not be exceeded at my current level. Regardless of how small or large the glitch is, it consumes (although quite serious, you get the idea) my mentality.

Sadly, glitches are merely the beginning of my problems. If I don’t remember something occurring, I’m compelled to repeat my actions in an attempt to what I have titled “compensating”.

An example of one of these. I was completing the mission “beneath the waves” (Slyvari main story). One of my strategies was to bait the enemy towards the prisoners and attack set AoE traps (Necro Staff). Suddenly, Ehuatl jumped OUT of his cage (literally, completely out) and attacked the enemies scoring two kills. I gained such a pathetic amount of exp. However, it was enough to start stupid thoughts.

Thing is, I know it’s stupid. I know there is absolutely no reason I should care. I know I shouldn’t even bother “compensating” for it. But I do it anyway. It’s like I have to.

I often tell my mates, “don’t worry, this is my last time” only to restart anyway. Which makes the problem worse.

Ultimately, I’m here if anyone were to have any advice or potentially “share” any stories they have had. Again, I know it’s stupid. Sorry if this is pathetic xD.

Thanks for reading!

Roleplay as the bad guy. The bad guys are always getting problems, however they ignore/get over it and try to break things more often. Since you would be trying to break the fabric of reality, bugs/glitches would help you instead of annoy you.

So that’s the challenge… can you dark your own mind?

What an interesting response. It’s certainly an option. Thankyou for the suggesting it!

My question would be, is this something that affects you in real life or just in game? If it’s just an ingame consideration then maybe Elrey’s suggestion. Invent a personality and background for your char where he doesn’t care about such things. Or he thinks about them but then puts the thoughts aside.

A long time ago, I thought like you. I thought that I needed to do everything myself, on my own merit. That kind of logic really doesn’t work in MMOs. I’m never going to solo Tequatl. Other players will be there attacking, healing, rezzing. That’s as it should be.

MMOs are meant to be imperfect and by attempting to perfect them, you’re missing part of the magic. Sometimes luck can be a factor in a victory, even for professionally athletes.

A ball takes a bad bounce, the wind is in a certain direction, someone slips in the outfield, anything can happen than can give you an advantage. But a team game is different from a solo game, and when I play solo games I definitely play that way..when I play games with others, I abandon that and see the game from a top down point of view. Suddenly it’s more than about just me…and that’s perfectly okay.

It certainly isn’t as prominent in real life, but it certainly occurs. I often find myself repeating things due to me “not remembering”. It drains me. But that personality idea sounds really good.

It’s awesome (in a sense) to hear about other people’s stories with similar thought processes. It certainly reassures me that i’m not the only one. Thankyou so much for the great response. I appreciate it! Hopefully I can adjust to this mindset like you did.

You’re 100% right though. I suppose I am missing a large portion of the game. Again, thanks for the response

If this is something that effects real life then using your char to get past it is something that can be used outside of the game. You can use your char to learn coping strategies for changing those “stupid thoughts” to thoughts on how to go past those glitches and imperfections and use that mindset to carry over to real life.

Another great point. It’s certainly worth working for. The perks of succeeding are just to great. I really appreciate everyones advice. Thanks everyone!

You know, you’re not responsible for glitches in someone else’s game. The best thing you can do for that game is reporting said glitch when you find it.

And you know what? You restarting because you encountered a glitch is not fixing anything. It’s just making everything worse for you. The thing is, glitches are expected when you have a project as large as a major videogame. You don’t get punished for encountering a glitch, that would be like punishing you every time you run into a well-behaving 5-year-old. You get punished if you encounter a glitch and deliberately use it to gain an unfair advantage. That’s more like brainwashing that 5-year-old to do your evil bidding.

And really, even if you were to be punished for encountering a glitch, restarting your character because you encountered a glitch does not make your encounter with said glitch disappear. That’s not how they punish you in a videogame. An actual punishment would be terminating your service either temporarily or permanently. And if you were to self-punish yourself by leaving the game for 3 days every time you encounter a glitch, that would actually punish ANet as well, as you are still a player and thus an asset to them.

…Believe it or not, I fear gaining both an advantage over other players and exceeding the boundaries that should not be exceeded at my current level.

How do you know the game isn’t meant to work that way? Please keep in mind that many, if not all, players encounter glitches at one point or another, or some anomaly that benefits. (And what of the glitches that hinder? There are plenty of those too! Maybe that can balance things out for you.) Most continue happily along, like finding a small amount of money in the middle of a street. So, in essence, you encountering a glitch actually puts you at a level playing field with everyone else. No advantages for you!

I agree that if you encounter a glitch, the best thing you can do is report it. Don’t restart, just move on. Consider yourself a part of the Anet QA team. You must go on to the next thing to find the next glitch and report it! I also very much like the suggestion of roleplaying.

Much like real life, we give and we take. No one can do it all alone. No one can do it all perfectly.
