I’ve had the game since launch but I always held back on dungeons as I wanted to get gear then I would just put it off as I didn’t really get it.

I play Warrior, Guardian, Elementalist and I’m leveling a Engineer and Ranger.

Tried to do Asc with my guild but I just didn’t understand what I was doing wrong, as an example, there was a boss where I was told to bunch up, so I did, the boss circles his axes and I die, I try to ress but I get killed.
Next time I LoS him and hide when he does his move that killed me and I got people saying “What are you doing…?”

I don’t know, it’s been three years of putting it off and I really want to get the most out of Guild Wars 2 but I just can’t get my head around Dungeons, I wanted to avoid spoiling them but it looks like I have too.

What videos would people recommend for a “new player” I don’t feel like the main game has prepared me at all for the kind of tactics that seems to be what everyone is doing. I’m completely lost and confused by it all.

Seems that what you are missing is when to dodge, no matter how hard something hits, if you dodge then you’ll be fine.
So, you need a bit more practice and learn to identify the animations, I suggest you to look for videos showing how to do the dungeons.

I assume you’re talking about Kholer in AC (the ghost boss you encounter after the Spider Queen and graveling hallway). The point of stacking is to just burn a boss down as quickly as possible; that’s why your party were wondering what you were doing when you tried to hide from the attack.

That whirling axes attack of his has an obvious and long set-up. If you can see well enough, watch for when he slowly spreads his arms out and pulls back his sword; this is what he does right before he pulls everyone to him to Whirlwind them. When you see him do that, either pop a stability skill or a reflect to keep him from pulling you. You could also just learn the timing and dodge the pull.

If you can’t see well enough to avoid it and get pulled, use a stun break and then dodge backwards as soon as you can to avoid being chopped to death; run back up close again once he stops his spinning attack. You could also pop an invulnerability skill (aegis, for example) to help you survive the attack.

As for dungeon tactics and info in general, you could look at the official wiki, search for youtube videos, and/or use gw2dungeons.net.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll certainly check out the site and read through it, I really want to get the most out of Guild Wars 2, been playing it for a while but never really took it seriously up till now, always got too intimidated by Dungeons.

But these will help out a great deal!

Also mention at the beginning of the dungeon run that you’re new to this dungeon/path. People are much more forgiving and helpful if they know you’re new to dungeons/that path before the fifth wipe.

And read and respect the LFG. Don’t join groups you don’t belong in and if you’re unsure because of a vague LFG, ask if you aren’t instantly kicked. Better to be kicked before the run than in the middle.

Exp means experienced, not explorable. You’ll want to avoid those groups until you know the dungeons well.

I understand where you are coming from. I put off dungeons for a long time as well. I finally forced myself to start them and now dungeon running is by far my favorite activity in GW2. I wish I had more free time as I am always happy to take anyone regardless of level, gears, skill, etc. with me on a dungeon run. All that is required is a positive attitude.

Feel free to add me as a friend and if I am ever on with enough time for a run, I will go with you. Otherwise, you might want to try looking through this thread for help with dungeons:

As for dying, its all about practice. It takes time to learn the mechanics of each boss so don’t stress out if you are dying a lot at the moment. Best of luck!

I have found that stability lessens some of Kohler’s damage when he spins. So let’s say you’re on your Warrior, pop your stability like 5 seconds in, and when he spins try to dodge roll at the right time(a lot of the game boils down to this mechanic)and use mending or the signet that cleanses conditions. You’ll get it after a few tries.

Don’t get mad at yourself if you go down at the Spider Queen. She sucks. Just kill one of the little spiders to get right back in the fight.

And when you’re skipping the trash make sure you have Balanced Stance or Dolyak!
