The main turnoff of this game for me has always been the lack of “other stuff to do” – housing, fishing, collecting lore items or books, mounts, etc – there just doesn’t seem much to do outside level grinding, hand-held exploration, jump puzzles and end game gear grind.

Has that changed at all in the past 3-4 years, or are things pretty much still the same? I’d check it out again if there was something else to do other than combat-oriented/leveling oriented stuff.

Thanks!

In the past 3-4 years they’ve added several hundred hours of new content, story, and maps across multiple mediums and game types.

So same stuff as before, just more of it – and no added content beyond that? No “fluff stuff” like housing?

What are you talking about? They added tons of new content, 5 man group content, 10 man ultra-hard raids, tons of new story, PvE maps with new concepts, PvP maps, a new PvP game type, new WvW map, Guild Halls, cosmetic changes like the wardrobe. Go look at the patch notes for the past 4 years, no one is going to type out every major change for the entire development course of a game for any major MMO, that’s ridiculous.

Read my question again- "The main turnoff of this game for me has always been the lack of “other stuff to do” – housing, fishing, collecting lore items or books, mounts, etc. " and " I’d check it out again if there was something else to do other than combat-oriented/leveling oriented stuff." So: Have they added anything to do that’s not leveling/combat/grinding oriented, like most MMOs do – or is it all still that?

There are similarities to things you mentioned, you know how GW2 works nothing is a copy of Runescape. For example there are often lore collection achievements associated new story installments. Guild Halls are very much like player housing in that you can turn them into anything you want visually. Gliding/mushrooms/Bloodstone Fen gliding masteries can be considered mounts of a sort. Wardrobe and other collections exist. Blah blah blah etc. etc. And the “etc.” you list may be in the list as well. There is a MOBA style PvP mode now, I have no idea what interests you.

All I can say is that there has been a enormous amount of content and features added since launch.

I suspect this game is never going to have much of the sort of stuff you prefer.

Ahh, I get it now, another post pushing for mounts and housing which have been talked to death and dismissed.

I may have been trolled but he seemed liked a guy asking about sort of archaic MMO stuff without just checking the patch notes. Most of the stuff he asked I think has been addressed in a much better way than what he was expecting.

I’m sorry – I didn’t realize having stuff to do beyond jump puzzles and heart quests and “dynamic” quests was archaic – in fact, most MMOs have these things, or some semblance of them. I did look over the patch notes last night, thanks – and it doesn’t seem like they’ve added much except gliders (meh), more jump puzzles/living world stuff (meh), more combat-oriented features (fine and all, but there’s nothing in this game to do beyond that), and more grind. I’ll go back to Rift or ESO for now. At least in Rift there’s fishing, housing, lore items, and some fluff stuff to do when I’m bored of questing/grinding. ESO less so, but I think they’ve got housing on the table for the near future, so there’s that – and lore books/little lore tidbits to find.

I miss when an mmorpg sent me off on adventures.

GW2 feels like a daily checklist.

Fill up a heart by killing x mobs, collecting x items, interacting with x objects, etc.
Get your AP by unlocking x skins, killing x mobs, or consuming x items, etc.
Complete your daily by mining x ores, capturing x camps, or winning x matches, etc.

Good grief it’s like the worst examples of mmorpg quests were turned into a whole game on their own.

Anyone remember the days when an mmorpg would have a person in town needing your help. Sending you off to those distant mountains. To journey deep into a mysterious cave, finding some ancient ruins. Navigating deadly traps and conquering strange beasts. And eventually coming across whatever that NPC was after tucked away in a tomb. What an adventure!
