I unsubscribed from WoW, because there’s going to be a 6 month contentless lul between Siege of Orgrimmar and the next expansion. I decided it’s time for a new MMO for at least the next six months.

On WoW I am primarily an arena or rated battle ground player and also a role player. I secured the rank of Rival which is in the top ten percentile for all arena players.

I don’t play mmos for PvP though, which I suppose is ironic, I like exploration a lot more, but there’s no exploration in WoW, I know where everything is.

So if you played WoW in the past maybe tell me which class I would like to start off with. I preferred hunter class. And perhaps leave some tips that the intro guides didn’t really tell you.

Well to start out instead of open world pvp there is WvW maps that you can go to. PvP arena’s are totally seperate from PvE and WvW, as in different equips and you are automatically at 80.

Learn to dodge roll. Combat is a lot more action pact then in WoW. Less passive mitigation a lot more active.

If you like exploration then you should love gw2, because 80% of the game is all exploring. I feel like everything in gw2 is a lot less main streamed than in WoW.

As for class there is a ranger class that has a pet, but from what I hear there are a lot of problems with the pet. I would suggest warrior or guardian because they are the easiest to survive with while you first start out.

Last but not least forget everything you know about tanking and healing. No designeted tanks or healers in gw2. The meta for PvE is pretty much just run full zerker gear and put out as much damage as possible without dying.

I am a former wow RBG and arena player aswell: http://i.imgur.com/b6ud71T.jpg. Quit wow for good to play this.

The main advice i could give you is that there is a huge difference between classes in this game. Some are more simplified than frost DKs while others are more complex and more difficult to figure out than anything youll find in wow. Its easy to pick the wrong class and see this game as too easy.

I started out with a ranger since i liked playing hunter in wow aswell. It was far less complex and fun than wows hunter imo. It bored me so much that i whent back to wow. Since i thought all classes where similar back then i didnt bother looking further.

1 month later i came back and i started playing engineer and thats been my main since. Thats about a year ago. If i had to give you an advice for a class id say elementalist or engineer. Thief and mesmer are ok aswell but a bit easier mechanics wise.

The main difference between wow and GW2 is that GW2 combat is more twitch. Its really about knowing all classes, what to dodge when to use your relatively short CD CDs etc. Its a bit of a reaction game and a different mindset than in wow. So try to avoid playing it like in wow. In fact….that applies to the entire game, both pve and pvp.

Some of the advantages in pvp compared to wow:

- No cheaters, boosted ppl and bots.
- Money and leveling via spvp
- Soloqeueus with their own seperate ladders.
- No queuetimes for unrated pvp.
- Spectator mode
- A dev team that actually tries to improve the game (eventho they arent succesfull all the time.)

Im not the biggest expert in PvE so maybe someone else can give pointers. for that.

Just make sure you join a good guild OP or find some people that can show you the ropes while playing. Its really hard to tell you about everything that is going on in this game via a forum post like this. Better to find out while playing.

This^^

But you missed out :-
No gankers.
Crafting is a gold sink, not a source.
WvW battles are more epic and (can be) highly tactical.
High levels are not OP in starter zones. (Including WvW if you’re properly geared)
The general player base is much more sociable. You won’t get flamed (beyond a very few random idiots). There are no ‘nasty’ emotes like /spit. No teabagging.
If you die, it’s likely someone will ‘rez’ you.
There’s no fighting over nodes or kill stealing.

The list goes on…

As another ex WoW player, I think there are a couple of other things that need to be said, mainly, everyone wins. Help people out, if someone is struggling to kill a monster help them, you will both get XP and loot, there is no kill stealing. If someone is clearing the mobs around an ore node, help them, you will both be able to mine the node, fell the tree etc, there is no node stealing either. Everyone can resurrect people, and you get XP for doing it.

Take your time to look around the scenery is beautiful, using the specific viewpoints you even get XP for admiring the scenery.

Take your time to level, a lot of people complain about how little there is to do at end game, for me end game starts at level 1.

I mained a hunter in WoW from before TBC till after MoP, I don’t find the Ranger in GW2 as bad as a lot of people make out, you do have to control your pet yorself, it won’t move out of area effects with out you calling it back, and the F2 abilities can be a bit slow to respond. Remember to keep switching between your two active pets and using your healing to help keep it alive. Also a melee Ranger can work quite well, something that WoW gave up on if you want to try something different.

The best advise as far as characters go is try different classes and make sure you try all the weapons available before you decide what to take. I also understand that you can try your character at level 80 by going into sPvP in the Mists so you can see how it plays at high level, I am not sure about this as PvP is not something I am really interested in.

One of the many things that is great about GW2 is that in GW2 every class can play as range or as melee. It depends on the weapons you are using.
You said that you like hunter, ranger of course is a good choice but for example in case you decide to play a warrior or a thief you can also use range weapons.
Also classes that one would at first glance think of as range can go melee.

Have fun!

Arena battle or rated battle here is called sPvP or structured PvP. World PvP in WoW here is called WvW or World vs World. Also here, on WvW sides (like alliance and horde) don’t fight against each other, but servers, 3 of them to be exact. So to be more precise, it’s World vs World vs World battle. WvW requires high ammount of tactics and you usually find yourself following a commander or at least listening to him on your servers TS (teamspeak).

As for exploration, if you’re looking for that, you’re going to be a lot more than satisfied. I think ANet did an awesome job on that part, and right from lvl 1 you’re going to face some amazing sights. Not to mention high peak locations called vistas that give you sceneries of some places that you might enjoy!

As for the biggest difference between the 2 games, well, it’s the combat and the class functionality.

There are no Tanks here, no Supports, no DPS characters. Every class can do damage (DPS), can support itself AND others and provide sustain and stability (tank).

The dynamics of battling in GW2 is huge. Every class can counter any class (Yes, even rangers, because people are complaining about them the most. I main a ranger). Say 1 player goes out in sPvP with a warrior. Now thies warrior wields a sword and a warhorn as one set, but can switch is to a hammer at any time. So he goes out and starts drilling through some enemies, capturing a point, but here comes an engineer. Now this engineer, although doing less damage, constantly stuns and pushes the warrior. There is simply no way that the warrior is going to reach him. Now this warrior can do 2 things, either replace one set of weapons with a longbow or a rifle, so he could range him, OR invest trait points (like talent points) so any of his moving skills would break stuns and slows. Now if an engineer ever things of stunning him, the warrior can just use his leap skill on his sword or smash with hammer and he can get to him no problem! But now comes a necromancer, dealing a lot of condition damage (DOT), this is where warriors actually shine, since they can use spells like Shake it Off to remove conditions from themselves. But the necromancer is warry of that, so he’s going to play smart, put small condition on him, wait on him to use Shake it Off, then pull the plug, place tons of condition on HIMSELF (suicide??), then quickly transfer it all on our warrior. At this point the warrior just might die. But this warrior has a teammate mesmer, which puts on nullifier and simply denies every condition placed on his warrior.

This can go on and on how classes work together and how they can be made to counter any class, but I just wanted you to get an idea. Now about rangers…

To start off, they are NOT as weak as they are told to be. They are played a lot differently than in WoW and other classes in GW2 as well. Although called rangers, they usually are Better going off melee than ranged. Though of course, it’s all situational.

The closest you can go to hunters are engineers, since they kind of like to keep distance (although, I may get hate for this, since they can actually do pretty well in melee too with mines and pistols).

Welcome to the GW2 community, hope you enjoy! ^^
