Hey all,

New gw2 player here. I’m looking for the “better” pve support classes. I really like the ranger / thief, but could be swayed into a caster if they are better. I’m primarily playing with a warrior, so I’d like something that compliments that.

Not really into the heavy armor classes, so guardian is out.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

honestly it depends most on how you build the character. Thief for example can be supportive by running group invis skills (there are several), elementalist can be as close to a healer as you can get in this game while in water spec, ranger can get group buffs depending on the weapon set. Each class can go supportive just depends on how you build them. Sorry this isn’t the best answer but there are no set supportive classes in GW2, every class is itself basically

Understood, that’s what ive been hearing. The issue is, there’s always going to be a class that’s better for my specific situation. I was just looking for some insight on that. Im more of a PvE player, than a PvP player, so im looking for something that works well with a warrior partner, but can solo PvE decently.

Thanks.

Also, Im looking for a class that isn’t considered “useless” in dungeons. There’s a general consensus that every class can bring something to the table, but just how effective they are is my question.

Say i can support decently / DPS with a ranger, then that’s probably the class that Ill roll, because the thief, despite being amazing DPS, seems fairly lackluster in solo PvE at lower levels, and fairly squishy.

Thanks again.

I run a Venom share thief. Not only does me applying venoms give it to all team memebers, they get all buffs from traits to venoms, this means they gain 4 stacks of might and when they apply said venoms to enemies they heal. It’s a pretty strong support build for the thief.

Ah nice, how are you finding it in dungeons? I know solo pve every class is “capable”, im more interested in the dungeon aspect of the game.

I use my ranger as a support-ish class in dungeons. With a shortbow, trap skills and a spider pet (jungle/black widow spiders), you can get a LOT of snares/roots. Add an area-of-effect heal skill (Healing Spring) and you can keep a lot of damage off your teammates, assuming they can kite decently. And the DPS is still fair, too.

It sounds like Ranger is the profession your looking for. The Ranger has the Spirit of Nature elite skill that can revive players, Search and Rescue that makes the pet revive a player, Healing Spring that removes conditions, heals, and regenerates, and also spirits that can improve damage or give protection to everyone. Or how about Signet of Renewal that can make your pet pull all conditions from nearby allies to itself. The Ranger is also great at creating self combos. For instance, I love using Hornet Sting/Monarch’s Leap with the sword, in a combo with Healing Spring, to create an extra burst of AoE healing.

Next to that you have the different F2 pet skills that gives you a ton of possibilities. You can have a bear pet that can help tank while weakening the foe (black bear) or removing a condition from allies (brown bear). Some pets can do a very long chill effect (makes the boss deal slower damage and move slower), like the Owl that does a 5 seconds chill, or the Snow Leopard that does a 7 second chill. You can also use the Jungle Spider that does a 2 second stun, or the Fern Hound that does AoE regeneration.

Overall, a Ranger as support should not to be underestimated!
