Switching from EU to US?

Q:

Hi. I recently started playing GW2 again on the EU server “Underworld”. I play during the night from 12AM – 4AM. I’m an Asura, and the starting zone is basically me and all the NPCs, I have been playing for a few hours and haven’t seen a single soul, it’s getting boring to have to do all the events on my own.

So I decided that I could maybe switch to a US sever so that when I’m on at 12-4AM my time, the US is mid-day/evening and hopefully there will be a bunch of people running around doing events. Is this a good idea?

And my secondary question, how do you check your ping? I’m afraid I’ll have high latency on a US server. Does latency even matter in GW2?

Thank you.

TL;DR: I want to switch to US servers since nobody plays on EU when I’m on (12AM-4AM). Good idea or not? Will I lag and not be able to dodge etc.?

The lines between europe and the US are pretty good and there is not a real reason to expect you to lag more. The strengt and speed of a connection is based on the weakest link. Cause your connection might make more hubs getting there there is a slight risk on having a bad hub on the way. But the change is still very very slim. The main reasons for having servers in europe is that the connections between eu and us are pretty good but also very expensive. so online services (like this game) try to help by avoiding them.

Cause network lag is very depending on the hubs your using and cause that is decided by your ISP (or atleast they are responsable) there isn’t a straight answer. If you dont havetrouble now I don’t think you will have trouble if you switch, but in the end, the only way to find out is by trying it out yourself.

You generally will not see a ton of people in the starting areas, on any server. I chose an EU server when I started, but have switched over to an NA server ffor similar reasons (I live in the US and had gone EU because of friends who have since stopped playing).. Unfortunately, you can’t guest to the NA servers to try them out, so you may or may not be happy with your choice after the transfer (though you can always guest for free after that). You’re really only stuck on a server for WvW, so if you like that you’d want to check out the WvW forum for some research of which server to choose. 12AM-4AM EU time is something like 5PM-9PM US, which is a pretty busy time on the NA servers.

While not a definative nor numeric answer to your issues, Guesting to an NA server is very quick and simple thing to try out.

I play on both (two accounts). I have noticed no difference at all in how the game runs.

Sorry to correct you but this answer is wrong. While EU-players can transfer to NA worlds and NA players can transfer to EU-worlds, it is NOT possible to guest on an NA world when your homeworld is an EU-world. Just as an account with an NA homeworld can’t guest to an EU-world.

My bad. I was not aware of that limitation in Guesting.
