In the past I used win7 32-bit and Gw2 would crash whenver I put graphics settings on medium or above when zoning or it would just crash out of nowhere.

Switching to Win8 64-bit has shown a huge difference in quality and I have had no crashing so far. The Witcher 2 use to crash on me, not anymore!

2.8 quad core cpu, 4gm ram , nvidia 550ti.

crap specs in the gaming world but it is plenty to run this game in beautiful high settings with 40-50 fps in PvE or Spvp.

Anet built this game around the 64-bit interface and that is why many players still crash.

4 gb ram is still a bit low, you should consider doubling it if you have the cash to spare.

Agreed. Upgrading your “Ram”, will do wonders for your game quality. And, oddly enough, the performance gain will far outweigh the price you pay.

What kind of performance increases are we talking about? Like what kind of issues will be fixed?

Namely – will fps or ‘choppiness’ improve noticeably?

I also only have 4gb of Ram but am hesitant to get 4 more as I’ve heard claims like this in the past – but after adding more Ram I didn’t notice any difference…

I upgraded my previously pathetic 4gb stock rams to 16gb Corsair Vengeance and bought a SSD just to install games. Loading maps has never been so fast. Used to take 30-60 seconds to transition into another map, now it takes max 5 seconds.

It’s hard to put into simple terms, but, I’ll try. Say your computer has 4gb of “ram”, and, at all times, your computer is running 3gb worth of programs. If you we’re to buy a game, that requires 2gb to run, your computer will have to start "file swapping " to compensate for the lack of sufficient “ram”. This will slow down your system to a crawl, or worse (you will notice it a lot during loading screens).

If you upgrade to 8gb, everything can be loaded into the “ram”, at the same time. You won’t have to worry about “file swapping”. That will translate into noticeable improvements in loading speeds, choppiness, etc.

It’s a little more complex than that, but, it’s the basic idea.

Regarding my memory (4gb), in task manager I can see it hitting 80+% routinely while playing GW2. As it’s not hitting 100% though, does this still explain intermittent choppiness?

Also, if I did have more RAM, would this in any way reduce CPU usage?

Usually adding more RAM won’t affect CPU usage at all. If anything if the game is paging to disk to run, adding more memory would probably increase CPU usage in the game.

One way to reduce CPU usage is to use the frame rate limiter on the graphics options. For instance if routinely get above 60fps, setting it to limit it to 30 would reduce CPU usage since it doesn’t need to crank out frames as fast as possible. The only other time I’ve seen CPU usage low in a game is when you have settings set too high. CPU ends up waiting on the video card.

Choppiness could be explained by having the graphic settings too high or low performance from your drives. The game has 15GB of data and less than 2GB to use. So the game is loading data off the hard drive while playing as well as loading data onto the video card continuously (depending on the amount of memory on your video card, resolution, driver AA settings, etc). It’s not something you can easily finger as to why you encounter chop.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Guild Wars 2 seems to hate 32 bit systems and the decreased access to RAM. It would crash on a regular basis on my 32 bit system, all with out of memory errors.
