I thought there was no trinity but now people are looking for tanks and healers. Which profs are considered a tank or healer? I tried spec’n out a elementist w/all +healing and I don’t see how they would make a tremendous difference.

I know dungeons are hard but how do you tank without aggro management or taunts? I figured everyone would just have to invest in some toughness and use defensive abilities rather than reverting back to the old trinity.

What’s the thought man?

i think people are just failing to realize the change in the game and are falling back on what they know from former games.

Give it time, theres a large influx of new players (read: non-beta people) and this will sort itself out as people learn the game

I would say Engi is a capable healer
Guardian has some great healing as well.

Guardian also has great groupwide mitigation. I wouldn’t consider ANY class a single target tank as there is NO threat mechanic in game.

Tanking doesn’t exactly work since there is no way to hold aggro, same as healing doesn’t work because it isn’t powerful enough. What you really need to clear a dungeon efficiently is some people with control (knockbacks, stuns, etc.) abilities and some with support (condition removal, boons, etc.) abilities, however these abilities should ideally be spread out over a large portion of the party.

Likely the people looking for tanks and healers just don’t know how the game works yet in regards to its differences to other games.

In the same way you don’t feed trolls, you should just avoid people asking for tanks and healers. You’re not going to have a good time in their group.

A-net never said that holy trinity is not possible, however you don’t need tanks or healers to complete a dungeon, you can easily do it with 5 of the same profession, all it takes is knowledge about what you are playing, taking into account combo fields etc,…

Avoid these people like the plague…the plague of ignorance, scary voice beware!

Also don’t try to argue them on it, once infected they are immune to logic, best to let them find out the hard way.

Don’t take life too seriously, no one gets out alive anyway.

We had a guildie using trinity language before we had a group go into Catacombs. Then we ran it with two thieves, two warriors, and a mesmer, only falling to the triple rangers. People just want to fall back on old ideas.

It’s just because people don’t understand the mechanics all that well yet. There IS still a sort of trinity though… except it is now, “support”, “control” and “damage”. But every class can do all 3 and you can be a hybrid that works really well as well so it’s best to just grab some people and go.

Another vote for avoiding these people. Otherwise you’ll just be wasting your time and promoting bad/unskilled game-play.

Make a comment in chat saying that in this game you don’t use dedicated healers and tanks, just to make other players aware, then ignore them. It’s the best you can do.

If they’re willing to discuss politely (in /say or /map chat) then you can explain about the new roles in GW2: defensive/offensive support, movement and skill control of enemies, and damage. Everyone is supposed to do a little of everything depending on the situation.

But after that it’s up to them to learn, it’s not your responsibility. Leave them alone to their bad game-play.

This is just people trying to bring back the trinity. It will work for some things but overall it won’t work in this game. They need to adjust to a new gameplay style.

Dungeons are in a really weird place right now. Many of the enemies are going to hit very hard and at the same time take a lot of focusing to take down. There are many encounters where the first person through a door is going to get dropped and there really isn’t a way around it; the two dodges you get just don’t go far enough and the only other option is for some to spec themselves, well, tanky.

Control is in a really terrible spot right now. The stuns/dazes/etc last for only a few seconds and when it takes 10-20 seconds to focus down one enemy it is just insufficient. I greatly dislike the WoW styled 60 second recastable sheeps, but right now if two mobs target the same character that isn’t specced tanky then that character is going to go down.

Melee is also in a very bad spot. Melee mobs can almost without exception be kited by ranged to mitigate nearly all of their damage. At the same time the ranged mobs themselves can get off the lion’s share of their damage and their auto attacks alone are often enough to down a group. All characters are going to be exposed to ranged damage and melee characters are going to have to expose themselves to both ranged and melee in order to be effective. This usually ends with the melee characters getting melted in a very short period of time and further confounding this is that the melee characters are going to get downed away from the rest of the party.

Right now there are several things that are putting dungeons in a weird place. It really should be no surprise that folks are attempting to go back to tank/healer/damage. While there is so much vitriol towards the “trinity”, it evolved because it is a very effective form of managing things.

Ill just say i play a guardian. I have gear thats a mix of power toughness and vitality at the moment. Once i get 3 stat gear ill add healing into that mix. I mitigate damage very well deal decent damage and have a good hp pool to work with. I use my 7-9 skills for healing and damage mitigation for the group. I also focus on reviving my party members who arnt dead in order to make the zone a little faster and easier. I make it a lot easier on my party to survive a zone as long as there not being stupid. Its all about play style though. Those that dont learn to do a little bit of everything to make stuff easier as a whole will most likely be known as that so called bad player in this game.

The concept of falling back onto old precepts alarms me greatly in GuildWars 2. As a former WoW player like many the change is a little difficult but a well received one all round.

Playing an Engineer I’ve discovered, much to my amazement (as I forwent playing the beta with my pre-purchase), that I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I can heal really well for myself and bit for my allies. I can drop condition removal potions and buff circles. I can speed boost. I can chill, poison, burn, bleed, blind, knock back, knock up, you name it. This diversity in ability is wonderful. It’s me playing a medium-armour class being able to perform the rolls of all 3 to a lesser degree.

So if you meet a player who is stuck to the old ways, just kindly take them aside and have a chat with them if you have the time (and if they’re receptive to listening and learning). Show them what abilities their classes have and ways they can use them with each other. The MMO old guard might be resistant to change but that doesn’t make them unable to adapt.

Elektra King.
Master Engineer of Blackgate.

I did AC on my ele, group asked me to stay on water the whole time. I had full healing gear, most pretty decent as I had good luck getting some, and making some. Sure there wasnt any real major heals like other games, however I did watch there health bars most the time and I did notice eles heals really did help a lot, not only with traits basically leaving permanent regen on party, but basic attack adding splash healing, with 20% cool down on water spells my gyser was up and ready alot.

I think it’s just people making mistakes, as the dungeons I’ve done have been far from the trinity.

The most similar thing we had was how I, being a Warrior and the toughest member of our mostly-caster group, stepped in front of ranged attackers to eat their attacks so my group members could throw down all their spells without being hampered by petty things like death.

Ya I think alot of people forget about the line of sight combat in this game, just cause you have something targeted doesnt mean your gonna hit it^^ specially if another enemy/object gets in the way lol
