The boring grinding strikes me.
Your personal story quests jump a few levels each time because you’re supposed to be doing other things in between. What those other things are is up to you, you can explore, craft, doing dynamic events, do heart quests, go to WvW or some combination of those and it’ll all give you experience.
Also I have to say I’m sceptical that you really enjoyed combat in WoW if it was only enjoyable because you could do something else for fun at the same time. If that’s the only way you enjoy playing a game it might be like Flett said that you just don’t like that type of game.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Obviously the Necromancer has not captured your attention fully. I would suggest you try each of the professions before settling down with just one. You have five character slots to fill and five races to choose from. All differ from each other in some respect with their story-lines and all feel different. If you make five characters with five different professions and get a little tired and bored with one you can play one of the others, say get each character to level 10 or so before making up you mind which satisfies you most.
Don’t only play the main storylines, there’s plenty of other stuff to do, all of which is richly rewarded. When you have a couple of levels to fill before the next mission in your storyline do some exploring, PvP – player versus player, WvW – world versus world and some crafting, this is what I do if I feel a little jaded with what I am currently doing.
Just experiment, Guildwars 2 is a very rewarding and interesting game, not the grind fest you think it to be. I speak from experience of having played a lot of MMORPG’s over the years.
Good Luck and Happy Gaming!
If you’re getting bored then try another class. Each class plays slightly different from the others. It may be as simple as Necromancer not being right for you.
I suggest Warrior. Warriors have more options than any of the other classes. Experiment with different weapons and I’m sure you’ll find one you like. Greatsword is pretty popular, so are Axes.
You can level by doing anything in GW2. If you need a few more levels for a story quest, just run around doing things you find fun, you’ll gain the levels pretty quickly. Even just finding points of interest and different areas of the map.
You might want to try a different class. I love Elementalist because I have to stay aware and on top of everything while playing. You might like Warrior, they’re the most OP class and so you don’t need to pay as much attention to fighting as with other classes.
Running around with friends helps. Do you have a guild, or are you interested in finding one?
You contradicted yourself, if warcraft was interesting you wouldn’t be watching videos or movies :p
The combat in gw2 is far more engaging, maybe you’re not doing the mmo stuff, hearts are bad, do some dynamic event chains. Or change class, necromancers are quite underpowered at the moment, the game is still young and many balance issues remain.
When I found the game a bit grindy, I jumped into WvW and found after level 50 or so the xp gain was significant. WvW is constantly changing, and even if you hate pvp (as I did), you’ll find it has something to offer for everyone. I’d highly recommend giving it a few days trial, then when you get a couple levels, you can go back out and continue on your personal storyline, craft, harvest, dungeons etc …
Having levelled all 5 races to at least level 40 so far, I can tell you that I found the human starting zone (Queensdale – extra odd, as it’s the only 1-17 starter zone) to be generally the worst for keeping up to speed with Personal Story levels. My human was a Mesmer, and I didn’t feel like I was having any harder a time finding events than the other races, but for whatever reason I was always a level or two behind.
It did take me a little while to get into my Necro. Some research into the builds & skills available might help pique your fancy, but honestly, you might just like another starting zone more (Sylvari probably had my favourite starter zone, but I found the Asura dialogue to be miles ahead in entertainment value… lippy little buggers).
Edit: Crafting does make a significant contribution if you stay on top of it, I’ve found, too.
That wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the fact that almost all of the quests in the zones is either defend this area, or defend these guards, or defend this courier, or kill all of these monsters.
That’s quite a few different things, actually. Ok, some similarities, sure, but given that combat is the centre of the game what do you want instead?
The best advice I can offer is either to switch professions, as has been suggested, or try a different zone. Some have more variety in their events etc. than others. If you’re around level 20-25 and human you’re likely to be in Kessex Hills, which has a number of champion bosses which come up regularly, but nothing’s stopping you checking out Diessa Plateau, Bisban Wildlands etc. if that doesn’t work for you.
In World of Warcraft it atleast was interesting to combat mobs, and was just a thing I would do while watching videos on youtube or a movie on my pc.
So how do I stop getting bored of the game?
You preferred the combat when you could do it while paying attention to something else at the same time? Each to their own, but I would say that must have been less engaging, surely?
Hearts seem like quests, and they kinda are. But they are not the only way to level, in fact they are not even the main way. Try to mix up what you do, jump into WvWvW a little to change pace, or go on a mass hunting spree just killing every mob you come across whilst exploring maps and grabbing way points, vistas, and so on. Go try other starting areas as well.
I think what people consider “grind” is confusing as well. Grinding to me is any repartition, like old WoW when you HAD to just kill the same mobs over and over again in order to level. Some people feel the endless simple quests are grinding. I personally thought raiding was a boring grind in WoW, some people saw it as the end goal.
GW2 wins in that regard, most things can be done from the get go, and they most give XP (bar pvp in the mists, thats rank based and no xp is given in that area. But WvWvW is different and does reward xp).
I am currently level 45 on my ele, and my personal story is at level 13 I think. No area has been completed fully, because I mix it up and the XP just keeps rolling in. If anything I seem to be hitting the area level cap well before I complete the area, the exact opposite problem you have.
WvW has been my main entertainment and leveling method of choice. I would get my char to maybe about 10 or 20 from PvE then do WvW. If you have an active guild it helps keep things lively. Me and my guild grew up in WvW and if you’re in a good match, it’s highly engaging and different leveling in it. Playing against other players brings a dynamic to you leveling experience that PvE doesn’t
My biggest suggestion to getting into the game though is joining an active guild. It makes you have a home to come to in GW. Just do things with them and before you know it you’ll be 80 in no time
