I’ve had an idea for my mesmer to look more thief- like, with a mask, which would cover her face and an armor, which would resemble a real deadly assassin. Sadly, looking for such a look throughout wardrobe, I realized, there is no way to customize the look of a character different than stereotypic.

Light armors always look magical. There’s always that dress, which automatically makes a character look like a magi. Not to mention masks, which are sadly- not all, but a vast majority of them- really ugly. There’s a similar problem with medium and heavy armor, but they are somehow better designed, I liked a lot of them actually.

I’d like the armor designers to take such things under account. I’m sure I’m not the only one who spent hours looking through wardrobe in order to find something fancy.

This is what I managed to do with my mesmer (the previewed things are on my character now):

yeah, really wish i could wear a hood on my guardian ( and don’t speak to me of phantom hood and grenth hood, i want something like the light hoods). alas, until we get cross-armor class transmutation options, doubt it’ll happen

Edit: the look does look rather thief-y though, just not the stereotypical thief

cross-armor class transmutation options

Why is this not like the most wanted feature right now? Everyone should scream for this to happen! Why did I not think of this. All the possibilities!

You touched the shiny, didn’t you?

Most of the armor seems to be based around completely covering up the crotch/butt section of the bodies i.e. light armor is nothing but huge flowing dresses or coat tails. Even most heavy armor sets involve some kind of skirt. There must be something weird going on with that area of the character models. I’d kill for the GW1 clothing my mesmer had.

I’m all in for letting everyone use whatever armor they want, however: there are actually light armor pants that don’t scream ‘mage’ imo. All it takes is some clever combining of different sets.
There is also the AC legs which only has a short skirt-like thing.
Obviously it comes down to personal taste, but there are options that aren’t all long skirts, although not many.

There’s also the shadow assassin outfit on the gem store

As far as masks go, look for the scarf from dry top, it should work nicely. There are some light armor sets that don’t give the magical or fancy (for mesmers) look IMHO, maybe with some mix and match you could get a look closer to what you want.

Some armor that might have pieces to mix to get the look you want:

Armor of Koda (Honor of the Waves dungeon armor):

Vigil’s Armor (I like the pants)

Order of Whisper’s Armor

Student’s Armor

Acolyte Armor (I’d try the chest, maybe the mask too)

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

I agree. I really wanted a pair of tight pants for my mesmer and found it disappointing that really the only pants were the Embroidered ones…and those are just too fluffy. Oh and some ugly leather ones I think that made her look frumpy.

Also, lots of medium armors have tops that are long jackets or such and cover the butt of the pants.

But, I love that look you made. It does look thief-esque. I definitely would not think mesmer when first seeing your char.

The whole reason for not having trans-type charges was because it would be confusing in WvW since you weren’t able to see what profession people were. Gear, weapons, and buffs were used to distinguish who was what profession.

Then in-combat outfits came along… and so did the profession icon…

While it’s not necessary, I would love to see it happen. It’s not like it’s particularly hard to do, and, if anything, they could make it cost 2 charges instead of 1 when slapping on a non-inherent skin (light → light = inherent).
