So I’ve basically played all the classes now and I’ve narrowed it down to Thief or a Mesmer. I really can’t decide! So if you could help me by telling some of the reasons that you like one of the classes that would be greatly appreciated! Mesmer at lower level seems very weak to me but I’ve heard that the damage gets better as you level. Also I feel like with the Thief all the mechanics are introduced with in the first 10 levels. So please prove me wrong with either class! I just cant decide!

I have just made a mesmer so I am still early levels with her but she is now on my top 3 characters list. The reason being is because YOU control the battlefield with a mesmer. Drop phantasms and clones. shatter them…boom, no more enemy. Can’t go wrong with that XD.

I made a thief as my main. I’m only 8 levels in but jeez, it’s so fun running around with dual daggers and dual pistols. I’ve seen some pvp videos where a thief can take over half an opponent’s health with just one hit (while buffed up of course).

Both are heavily skill based, so take your pick. As a Thief, the Mesmer is very damaging to me, and I have to play tighter around them. They are kind of the anti-melee class. Warriors complain about them all the time. I am considering turning off my auto attack because my shots get reflected by one of the phantasms. Mesmer is the game changer, although fortunately squishy enough so far that I haven’t had too much problem with the actual killing part – I have to run away and heal more, and use cooldowns more, but overall I still come up on top. Chalk that up to skill, though; I’m sure good Mesmers can go toe-to-toe with anyone.

Thief, yes, everything experienced in the first 10 levels, and it’s the same after that – except that’s kind of good because you get to refine how it all works. There’s no top-end utility skills that are game changers really. You find your play style early and build skill upon it. I believe Mesmers have more reliance on those high level skills for different clones for different situations. I can only imagine that the Mesmer takes a lot of micro-management, and I can tell you the Thief is all about self-improvement.

I’d say Mesmer.

My thief is level 25 and I really have no desire to level him anymore. PvP is alright (despite the fact that you get focused hard) but PvE content is outrageously boring as a thief. With a dagger in your mainhand you push 2 buttons, 3 at max, before your target is dead.

There’s a lot of similarities between Thief and Mesmer, to be honest. A lot of the skills those bloody thieves use are just poor copies of what Mesmers can do (hehe!). The reality is, a Thief (I haven’t played one, but my friend does and we do a lot in game together) doesn’t have as much control of the battle field. They’re more sneaksy, but they’re way less tricksy.

And they don’t do more damage from what I can tell. I haven’t toyed with one, but I can take things down as quickly (if not quicker in some cases) than my friend on his Thief and I can also aoe stuff down quicker. I can take on more mobs at a time too. I’m biased, though!!

Thank you this helped a lot, I am leaning towards Mesmer because I like the fact that no one plays/really understands them. Coming from GW1 I know a lot about them and I love the theatric lore that they have. Thief seems kind of dry and repetitive since its used in literally every other game ever created. I always pull to thief though in almost every game. Hopefully I will get more replies!

I didn’t played the Mesmer in depth (just a little bit in betas) but got my Thief on 80 a week ago, and I’m rerolling on a Necro since then, because i feel like the Thief is more a PvP class.

Open PvE is fine, since you can pick out single targets to burst down most of the time, but in dungeons and against harder mobs like champs, it’s just not fun to play a thief (except if you like to play him ranged, but i see the Thief more as Assassin-ish melee fighter, and not as a gunslinger like the engineer , which i would pick for that kind of playstyle), since you are either downed by random hits in seconds or spam a ranged aa.

As i don’t want to play a character which is really good at something (open field low difficulty PvE), but horrible at other things (dungeons, except with some awkward supportish builds like Venom Aura, which are very specific, not fun or class themend, and kind of useless outside such group activities, which leads to trait resetting every few minutes), i kind of gave up on him, and would recommend trying out the Mesmer, if you are also not fine with that limitations.

For PvP, thats a whole other story.

Personally i think mesmer is more fun to play (haven’t tried thief much though tbh). Im levelling a mesmer atm and its a really fun thing to do, pve is loads of fun and they can take on easily multiple oppenents because of their tricky playstyle. Negative thing is that they keep u on ur toes when playing (u cant have a relaxed farming kind of play) cause they tend to die quickly if not making full use of their potential..
