I just can’t decide what to choose: Thief or Mesmer.

I like thieves because of their damage and because of their mobility, but I also heard that they’re dying pretty fast and also they don’t do well in pve.

I like Mesmers because of their illusions, but the problem is that I don’t actually like ranged classes.

I tried reading some similar topics but they’re too old, so I hope you can convince me which is better and why ( for PvP and WvW ), according to the statistics.

Leveling both of them is a bit too hard for a beginner.

I like both of these classes. Now I don’t know about PvP and WvW too much, but Thief can be very challenging to play in Dungeons but they do alot of damage if you can learn to survive on one. I know in WvW Thief is really good at roaming but that’s about it I think.

Mesmer isn’t necessarily a ranged class, Sword is one of their best weapons. Blurred Frenzy gives you 2 seconds of evasion and is on a 9 second cool down when traited. Mesmer’s are also good at helping the group stack Might and Time Warp is one of the best elite’s in the game (10 seconds of Quickness which makes you attack 50% faster).

Both classes are fun and are good at different things, I found both challenging to survive on for a while till I learned how to play them better though

If you prefer melee, you should roll a thief. Mesmer is my favorite class in the game, by far, but you will do far more kiting as a mesmer than as a thief. I have a level 80 thief and have no problem in PvE, not even dungeons really. Mesmers are way better for dungeons though.

Just realize that thieves are not an in your face bunker type class. You have to use your mobility, evasion, stealth, and dodge to run around mobs while you are killing them. Personally in PvE I use a condition build that basically bleeds mobs to death. The trick is to run away sometimes to let the bleeds do their work.

I have a level 6 mesmer and I`m not very happy with it’s damage ( around 20 ), while the thief has way better damage. The only problem with the thief is that he’s dying fast and this way you can’t level up as fast as the mesmer.

I play both (level 80), they are very different with my thief being in your face, unless you are a champ while the mesmer hangs back all the time (greatsword) and only resorts to melee when pressed (sword/focus).

Still haven’t gotten a hang of the thief’s combo field effects.

Well if you wanted to play mesmer the best way, you’d use sword/pistol, focus, sword. So its melee too. I have a lvl 80 mes and use sword/focus and I do very well and is the funnest class i’ve played and ive tried all classes.

In WvW, both are pretty godkitten annoying to fight against.

The thief is a lot like the mesmer, but the mesmer is harder to play. Additionally, a mesmer has access to a lot more than the thief, whereas the thief is able to maintain what it has a lot better.

Mesmar solo will make you punch walls.
