I just bought the game last night, and when i get off work in a hour-ish I will be rolling my first character(s).
What are some things you believe a new player should know, something you wish you did when you started out, or just general advice.

I plan on rolling a Charr Warrior, Human Thief, and either a (not picked a race yet, hate Asura) Elementalist or Necromancer. From those I’ll pick which to level to max first, or maybe I’ll hop back in forth like I do on WoW.

Thanks!

Keep all your materials, crafting is great experience for when you level.

-get the gathering tools asap(copper axe, copper pick, copper sickle) and always be gathering from nodes out in the world as you adventure, this will be the base of your income in the early levels.

-focus on gameplay and exploring the world, rather than focusing on chasing the next level.

I sell all my mats as crafting has no interest to me, and it more than pays for all my upgrades as I level

Read this thread.

Other than that, do what you enjoy and don’t make yourself do anything you don’t enjoy (there isn’t much that you strictly have to do), take your time levelling because max level doesn’t unlock all that much that’s new. Clear maps 100% for nice bonuses and exp. Welcome to the game and we hope you have fun!

collect crafting materials, as stated. for the first few levels (maybe until you stop using copper tools), though, I would sell the gathered materials on the Trading Post (for 1 copper below the next-highest sell order).

the most convenient thing the friend who recommended GW2 to me did was send me 5 silver. I upgraded equipment every other level and never had to worry about money until level 30 or so, at which point I knew how to get my own. It’s good to start with a buffer for income/costs
If you see me on, whisper me and I’ll send you 5 silver
