To Transfer or not to Transfer?
~Glitch
Some Tips:
- I don’t think you will see to much of a change in the ‘strength’ of servers but they will likely become more populated.
- With more players coming back if you plan on transferring to a higher population server doing before HoT might be ideal because the server could become full after people come back to the game.
- If you are sure there is no guild on your server that you like, it seems like a good idea to move to another server that has a guild that can fill that for you. Especially since HoT seems to be making guilds a bit more ‘important’ in HoT.
- An alternitave option that will require a bit of a time investment is to make a free account on the other server. They will have access to all of the WvW related stuff and you can they easily ‘switch’ between servers when you like meaning you can hang out with both your current friends and you potential new ones. One downside is you will not have the elite specializations or mastery.
Good luck with whatever you decide on doing.
Main Class – Ranger [Bezerker/Trapper Hybrid]
Main Mode – WvW [Gate of Madness]
Would there be any benefit to transferring servers before HoT release? Do you expect the expansion shake up WvW servers possibly hurting the community you are moving to or from?
I doubt HoT will have an immediate impact — it will take time for people to get used to the new maps and during that time, I expect to see some people return to WvW (or try it out for the ‘first’ time). Some worlds would be depleted by folks focusing on the HoT story, but that won’t last forever.
tl;dr it will take 3-6 months or longer to see how HoT impacts WvW in the long run.
I have found a guild on a different server to fit my game preferences. My current server does not have a guild like the one i want to transfer to be with (obviously this is WvW related). How does one decide between server friends (over 2 years on a server) and potential new group of active gw2 friends / guild opportunities?
As long as your new world is in the same region, you can keep doing PvE with your current friends. If they are WvW friends, then, ask yourself: what do you really like about your time in Tyria?
- Hanging out with the same circle of folks, who might or might not be as interested in the same things as you by this point?
- Doing more of the content that challenges you?
(Obviously, most people will fall somewhere in the middle of that.) I know a lot of people who get bored with games, because they have a strong preference for content, but hang with friends instead (or vice versa). Figure out which matters more for you and make a choice that gives you more of what floats your boat.
Use up all my in game gold (yes all) to transfer or pay real money?
If you can afford to plunk down cash on the game, I’d always do that. It improves your in-game experience (being poor is never that much fun) and of course, it helps out the game by supporting ANet.
The most expensive server move is just over US$20 (1,800 gems). You can save that in a short time by drinking water instead of soda when you eat out, bringing lunch from home, skipping the Starbucks (or just having plain coffee instead of a mocha, frappe mate latte in Haiti with the A-team), etc.
all good points. Thanks for the feedback i think i know where i stand. Cheers folks!

If this is the guild you want to be in, then transfer.
Nothing else should sway your decision.
