Q:

Just starting here like everyone else. Just wondering when you should sell an item on the Trading Post or just give it over to a vendor for quick cash.

A:

When you should NOT TP it:

Your projected profit, less 10% of that profit, is less than vendor. So if you can vendor for 1 silver, and TP for 1 silver 9 copper projected profit, the “tax” on sale will mean you get less than 1 silver. If you have time to carefully compare each item great, otherwise it’s pretty safe to vendor blues above level 30 as they are most all just 1 c over vendor, a sure loss.

Actually, the tax is 15%. The projected profit forgets to list the listing fee. Wink

Do not forget about salvaging ..
This is important for collecting materials for crafting or for selling on.

When I first started playing, I used a salvage/vendor system where anything below 30c I salvaged and anything above I sold.

Whether you vendor to a merchant or on the TP depends on the TP price you can get for the item as the other posters explained.

For simplicity I’m just going to give you my whole inventory sorting process:

1. Open any bags * and salvage any salvageable items.

2. Deposit all collectables. This quickly clears out all the crafting materials you gained in the last step, plus any you already had.

3. Look for any gear you want to use and equip it or move it to an invisible bag to put in the bank and transfer to another character.

4. Open the trading post and see what you can sell, check the projected profit and if it’s 10% or more higher than the vendor price sell it.

5. If anything has a lot of bids that are too low, or a significantly higher seller price than buyer offers list it for sale instead.

6. Salvage any remaining white items.

7. Double check everything left is not worth having. Then sell it all to a vendor.

*Later on you might want to sell bags on the TP as you often get more of a profit than selling the crafting materials, but as crafting gives good experience you’ll want to get and use the materials early on. (Plus you might enjoy it or want to level crafting so you can make your own gear.)
