Hi all, new player of 3 weeks.

I LOVED this game up until 80 and while I am really enjoying the HoT zones, I am finding that they just give way too much garbage loot.

I’m spending way too much time salvaging and sorting through items to the point that I am starting to dislike the game as a whole.

Does anyone just unbind the loot key and delete all the chests / garbage that the events throw at you? Is this a viable way to play?

I am in full lvl 80 berserker exotics and from what I understand I can get ascended gear from dungeons / fractals (I don’t care about legendaries or crafting at all) so unless I’m missing something turning off / minimizing loot shouldn’t really have any negative effects on my experience right?

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome, perhaps some long time players have solutions to the massive flood of junk the game throws at you, or perhaps you play with loot turned off too?

Your insight is much appreciated, thanks!

You could destroy everything, but you’d be much poorer in the long run… the majority of wealth is from item drops, not direct gold drops. I personally salvage most of my items… anything that is green or less is an automatic salvage, and any yellow that sells for less than the cost of an ecto (~35s) gets salvaged too.

Do you know about the various inventory QoL features?

  • Deposit mats into the material tab of your bank – click the gear icon in the top right corner of your inventory window.
  • Mass salvage option – right click on any salvage kit in your inventory for a drop down menu
  • Mass consume option – right click on the item for a drop down menu, only works with luck and transmute charges
  • Sell all junk – click the “sell junk” button in any vendor’s selling tab
  • Sell items to the TP from anywhere – open the Trading post window wherever you are (default: O), you only need to visit the NPC if you are collecting your gold.
  • Getting bigger bags – fractal bags, uncanny jar, bandit coin purse and Halloween pails are the cheapest 20-slot bags. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bag
  • Get specialty bags – some bags will automatically take certain items (e.g. junk, mats, greens, rares, equipment, etc) so they are not scattered everywhere in your inventory.

Btw, ascended gear does not drop from dungeons (unless you count the limited number of trinkets you get from completing the collections). And although fractals will drop ascended, you need to get to T3 and T4 to have a realistic chance for anything that isn’t a ring, so you’ll need some ascended pieces to have the AR to even attempt those. However, there are many other ways to get ascended. Have a look through the wiki:

Sorting? O_o

I use the crafting/oiled bags to auto sort those. Everything else gets salvaged. Exotics are the only things that get checked.

A couple of other hints, you can buy 18 slot bags from the TP for the same or not much more than it would cost to craft them. They run less than 4 gold each. It might be worth the trouble to buy another bag slot for your inventory, they go on sale often. This will make your inventory lots more roomy. I usually stock my inventory with 5 or so master level salvaging kits, and a yellow (rare) one. I can play for a fairly long time without having to go clean up my bag. Like was said earlier, right click the salvage kit and “salvage all” is a lot easier to organize your bag than it used to be. Just “deposit materials” after salvaging. It literally takes seconds to do.

True, there’s a kitten ton of stuff you are not sure if you want to keep it or destroy it. Especially those kitten recipe books. I just started to destroy them constantly. Really, never played an MMO with so much annoying loot.

I sell most on the TP. Kinda cool when I can get 10x or more from the TP compared to selling the item to a merch. If it’s not selling for at least 4x the merch price then I salvage it. Unless for some reason I get a wild hair and just save everything and do the Mystic Toilet just because.

I almost never have trouble deciding if I want to keep something or sell it. When I’m sorting my inventory I go through this process:

1) Check if there’s anything my current character can use or any skins I want. Put them in my invisible bag to sort out later.
2) Salvage all the rares for ectos.
3) Sell all the other equipment on the TP.
4) Salvage any equipment I can’t sell.
5) Deposit crafting materials.

That gets rid of the vast majority of stuff. Then I have just a few things to sort out and in most cases I know what I want to do with them. For recipes I’ll use the TP to check what it’s worth (if it’s a book I’ll just search the shared part of the name so I can see them all) and if any are worth a lot I’ll pick that one and sell it. If not I’ll pick one I don’t have and learn it. And if I already know them all I’ll pick whichever is worth the most and sell it. It probably sounds complicated but it only takes a few seconds to make a decision, the most time consuming part is typing out the name.

On the rare occasions that I get an item I literally have no idea about I’ll check the Wiki to find out what my options are and then decide.

One more QoL tip: if you’re not near a merchant or bank, just click on the crossed swords (PvP) icon on the top left of your screen. You’ll pop into the PvP lobby with access to both bank and merchant.
When you’re done sorting/salvaging, Click the crossed swords again and choose the Exit button. You’ll be put right back into the map you left. (A word of caution, though: you may lose your metaserver map by doing this. If you’re in a currently-active map doing stuff, you probably don’t want to use this method.)

I am well aware of this and I also check wiki if there are some strange items I never heard of. But still I think it’s annoying to have – let’s say – all the items you get for Mawdrey and you don’t want it at this point but still not sure if you want to keep it combined with a certain kind of lazyness and not enough space for such crap in the bank storage. So you keep those items in your inventory for years. I have constantly 3-4 rows full of crap in my inventory. Stuff like Verdant Brink contribution rank booster or the shovels from Silverwastes which I haven’t used now for 6 months or so but would be angry if I don’t have it in my inventory IF I should go there. Ah I just find it annoying. Really never had I an MMO with so many different currencies, items and stuff.
