Hello

So i am a little confused and overwhelmed by PVE world. I was playing mostly sPVP but i want to try PVE. sPVP is very simple. I know nothing(lol) about leveling, pve and this stuff. The world is enormous. In my opinion it is hard to get to know all aspects of this game by a new player.

So i am leveling my character at this moment and i have a few questions:

1. Which one items should i salvage and which one not? Some people say ‘sell green/blue/yellow items to vendor/trade post’ but now we can get ‘essence of luck’ from salvaging items so next question…

I found list of things which should be salvaged: Rich Clump of Ore; Valuable Metal; Scrap; Soiled Rag; Ragged Garment; Frayed Garment; Frayed Rag; Loaded Clump of Ore; Metal Scrap + White Items

2. Is it important to have high value of magic find? At this moment i have 35% (27lvl).

3. Why does mobs hit like a truck my Ranger? Not even with ‘toxic’ in name.

4. What do you think about ranger in pve?

5. Could you give me some tips? I am still looking for good tips about whole game. I found some but it would be nice to know more. Please don’t think i am lazy. I can link some info if you want to check me.

6. Why do people run from ‘boss’ to ‘boss’ in Queensdale? Is it a good business or what?

Probably i will post more questions but for now it is all.

1. Its up to you, I usually salvage when I cant be bothered to sell on the TP, if you want to try crafting its probably worth salvaging for the mats too.

2. MF will potentialy get you better drops, but I never reall noticed a change.

3. Some things just hit hard they are usually easy to dodge though, having done pvp probably puts you in a better position than some purely pve’ers.

4. I think rangers are fine in pve, great for solo play although there are a lot of neysayers, I’d ignore them if you like the playstyle.

5. Only tip I can think of is dodging but you probably already got that from pvp.

6. The ‘champion train’ in queensdale is supposedly profitable and ascended mats drop, I dont know as I find any kind of farming a bit dull.

Most importantly have fun with whatever you do in game

1. I generally tend to salvage every random drop that I find instead of selling them… UNLESS…. said item is an Exotic Item. The reason for this is firstly, because unless it is an exotic item, the odds of it selling on the Auction House for anything remotely worthwhile is incredibly low. Secondly is the fact that there is now a Monthly event where you are required to salvage 500 items total in a given month. And since that is one of the easier of the PvE Monthlies that is available to the game, I find I prefer doing that instead of running 10 Fractals, killing 50 players in WvW, (my highest level character is level 35), or finding and completing 12 separate and unique Jumping Puzzles (you can’t just do the same puzzle 12 times in a row, they have to be 12 different puzzles).

Basically my Monthly event rotation generally consists of the Salvaging Monthly, the Monthly Completionist, the Monthly Champion Killer, and the Monthly Event Completer. That is how I finish my Monthlies each month. And that is why I prefer to do the Salvaging when I find items that are not classified as Exotics.

Plus Salvaging 500 times in a month has the side perk of getting me a large surplus of crafting materials!

2. Magic Find is only important if you spend a great deal of time performing Salvaging in an attempt to get really high grade crafting materials such as Globs of Ectoplasm, and Ascended Item Materials.

3. Ranger is an incredibly good class for Open World Content and Roaming. It is not such a good class to take into Fractals or Dungeons however as the Boss AoE will constantly tend to kill your pet before you can properly order it to back off from the AoE. This causes your Rangers sustained DPS to drop significantly and his ability to defend himself successfully to almost disappear.

4. Depends on what part of PvE your trying to do. Openworld Roaming the Ranger is the best class there is. Map Completion attempts, again, best class there is.

Dungeons and Fractals however it can be considered bottom of the barrel by a lot of people.

5. I only really just started myself so I am not really the best person to give huge amounts of advice. I gave my best bits already.

6. I will let someone else answer that as I am still trying to understand the Zerging in this game.

I don’t care about WvWvW because my computer is crap (i5 750 2,67GHz, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD5850). So if i want to focus on dungeons and fractals(what is it?) i shouldn’t pick Ranger? Meh, what a disaster.

1: So, while leveling, I buy gear every 10 levels starting at level 10. This keeps me pretty well geared for the most part. I use better stuff I get from my personal story. Everything I used to sell but now I’d salvage it because of the new essences of luck that were added. These are great in PvE as they increase your chance for better loot.

As for “salvage items” I just sell those. Worth more on the TP than what you get from salvaging

2: It’s important but not really needed. If you want better chances at good loot then you want it to be high. It’s not real practical in dungeons as lots of mobs aren’t killed but if you ever get into champion farming, it’s really good.

3: If mobs are hitting you like a truck you might need to update your armor. Ranger is one of the more survivable classes in open world PvE due to their pet

4: I know Ranger has a bad stereotype in PvE (people using bears/longbow mostly) but I really like them. They can do alot of damage with sword, give the party 7% extra damage via Frost Spirit. Depending on your pet, can give some nice boons (5 Might from Melandru’s Stalker or 15 seconds of Fury from Red Moa). I’ve read their damage is about equal to Warrior when played right.

5: As for tips. Pure damage is the preferred way to go in PvE. Because of how fast you can kill the mobs it makes any kind of defense less desireable in dungeons. Unless it’s like a Guardian’s Aegis/Protection or Reflection. But, you don’t need to be full zerker to be successful in PvE.

You’ve probably gotten good at dodging in PvP so I won’t say the usual “l2dodge”. I can’t give alot of advice for Ranger because I don’t play it much.

Edit: I can say always try to have 20 points in Marksmanship for the Spotter trait. It’s epicness

6: Yes, hitting all the champions in Queensdale can get you alot of money because of the Champion Loot Bags you get. Also since most of the champs in Queensdale are events, you get a good bit of XP and Karma.

There’s also champ farming in Frostgorge Sound. Not as many events but guaranteed exotic champ bags

1) Check EVERYTHING for TP prices now. Even Whites are selling for decent coin. Make SURE you are looking at the PROFIT number (not the sale value) when you list items on the TP. I see WAY too many players listing items at a price where the PROFIT value is less than the merchant sell price (just plain stupid).

A lot of what you choose to salvage or sell depends on how you want to approach crafting. If you want to ignore it, just concentrate on maximizing your TP sales. Keep in mind that some players swear they get better profits by salvaging everything and selling the materials…..haven’t done the math, but I do know I can usually rack up some serious coin when I go and clear out my excess materials to free up storage space.

The Magic Find / Lucks issue has also thrown a bit of twist into this decision, but the general thought is for you to set some MF goals and alter your Salvage/Sell decisions based on these (EX: Salvage everything for Luck (sell materials if not crafting) until you hit 50%, then Salvage everything worth less than X (merch value) until 100%….)

Ranger is a great class , especially for a begginer. A lot of people do hate on a ranger though but dont let them get to you its a great class. Unlike other classes (thief for example) that have high burst, rangers are about sustained DPS. If you are having a hard time with PVE content get a fat pet out (Bear) and have him tank for you. If you use “Sick Em” you can get it to agro the add 1st while you pelt at it from far away.

As far as Fractals are concearned… basically its a group of mini dungeons so to say that are chained together. Meaning that 1 run in FoTM(Fractals) is either a grp of 3 or 4 of these dungeons (depending on which level you are doing). Its also a level 80 dungeon so you have a bit ways to go before you have to worry about it

1) Can you use it? Is it better than what you have? Assuming either answer is no then salvage white, blues and greens for mats and luck (in the case of blues and greens) but if you are desperate for coin you can check the TP to see if anyone is paying a lot for them. Yellows may be worth more than the mats and rune it contains so selling or salvaging (with a master or mystic salvage kit) may be dependent on the price of Ectoplasm and the rune/sigil in them item.

2) Doesn’t hurt but it does take a while. Mine is near 70% now and I do notice an uptick in green Vs blue and yellow Vs green.

3) I’ve played for almost a year and I have no idea how aggro works here. There’s been times when I’ve faced the Wolfmaster champ in the Wayfarer Foothills when I was down and trying to heal beyond my range attack range and 3 other players are in melee with him and he is still throwing axes at me to bugger up my rally. She was a thief BTW.

4) Sorry, never played one yet.

also for general info, maps, etc

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

6) A while back the devs upped the reward on champs since players weren’t bothering to take them out. But the reward ended up being to good and someone figured out that you could make a fair bit of coin going from champ to champ to champ and if the list is long enough then by the time you got to the end then the first would have spawned again. Side effect it was tough to find others to do group events that had shut down a waypoint or just others who would help out during a normal DE. Plus some on the champ train were a little rude if someone else jumped ahead and took out a champ out of sequence.

An update or two ago the devs dialed back the reward some, still better than from a long time ago but nowhere near as good as it once was. But it’s a still good way to get the champ monthly in a short period of time.

Enjoy the main game.

1. What should i do? Map completion? Dungeons? Fractals(oh man i still don’t know what is it)
2. How should i gear up? What is the best way to do this?
3. What is the fastest way to farm laurels?(are they only from daily?)
4. Which one salvaging kits should i use?

I have read whole thread, enormous wall of text. I don’t want be too harsh but i didn’t find it extremely helpful. And – 9 months ago. Oh man. Basically there are basics of basics. Maybe for someone who have never played in MMORPG’s it is very useful.

I was playing mostly sPVP

- THIS. I know i should move and dodge but it isn’t easy with 1st Ranger sword skill(crazy jumps). I know that buffs, combo fields and crowd controls are important.

My questions are about PVE content so world, dungeons, items, crafting etc. not about combat system. But thank you anyway. I would like to gear up as fast as i can because i am already ‘late’ and i don’t want to waste my time anymore.

Probably the best category ‘trinkets’ is ascended for laurels(1 per day? seriously). What about armor?

1. Really depends on what you enjoy the most. You’ll want to do at bit of map completion at least to have access to the dungeons/world events, and the rewards can be pretty decent since even the low-level crafting materials are now quite expensive. If you are looking for more challenging content, go for dungeons/fractals.
2. Berserker gear is the most effective for pve because, unlike pvp, you can rather easily predict the damage and avoid it. As for the acquiring part, it depends how fast you want it to be… I’d recommend gearing in exotics before going for ascended gear. You can buy exotic gear off the tp for a decent price or get them for dugeons tokens. It really depends on which content you want to focus first.
3. Laurels are awarded for daily (1/day), monthly (10/month) and achievements (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Achievement_rewards)
4. I personnaly use master’s for rares/exotics and basic for everything under

5. Could you give me some tips? I am still looking for good tips about whole game. I found some but it would be nice to know more. Please don’t think i am lazy. I can link some info if you want to check me.

1. I just salvage all the blues/greens simply to get my MF% up, they’re worthless otherwise. Sometimes if I’m pressed on time, I’ll just vendor them. If I don’t have immediate access to either a vendor or salvage kits? I’ll just destroy them. Don’t bother checking the TP prices, thats a huge waste of time.. at best you’ll save an extra silver or two. Yellows, I list them all on the TP. Sitting and thinking about ecto drop rates etc. will make your head hurt and frustrate you to no end, especially if you have terrible luck with RNG in general. Whites (salvage items) I usually get rid of, the return rate is even worse.. in terms of copper instead. Otherwise, go ahead and salvage if bag space isn’t an issue.

3. Because you’re not a heavy? I don’t know. You could try to dodge. And sitting in one spot and kiting doesn’t exactly work..

4. I don’t.

5. Not really.. play the game, you’ll figure it out. Look at some ranger guides on youtube, especially the ones geared towards PvE/dungeon content since that’s what you should tackle first. Well, that and making some coin. Last I heard champ train in FGS was still going on, its probably the best way. But generally: dungs/fractals -> gold -> better gear -> farming -> legendaries/ascended. Only other tip: have fun being a noob, you only get to be one once.. YOLO and all that. I have never failed so many times than when I was starting out. I saved up karma for like a month to get temple armor, then realized the stats were crap so dropped it and went for zerker dungeon armor instead. CoF P1 would probably be your thing. Probably most noob-friendly path to date, except for maybe AC P3.

6. Map completion is a waste of time. Especially if you’re near broke and are just doing it for the title.. only try for this when you have sufficient amt of gold and are aiming for legendary, otherwise your just shooting yourself in the foot if you try to. Dungeons ultimately net you $$, although still a good source for skill points, karma, crafting mats, etc. Fractals are mainly for 20-slot bags and ascended trinkets, especially the rings/back-piece. Literally no other reason you should/would run this.

7. I’m not the best person to give advice on gear much less for rangers, but why not jump straight into zerk armor. I’d imagine you’ve probably died countless times on your quest to 80, full zerk isn’t much worse than this (better actually). Spamming CoF P1/2 will get you your zerk set fastest.

8. Laurels: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Laurel. I rarely do any dailies/monthlies by choice anymore but thats probably your best option.

9. The salvage kits I use for blue/greens: Basic. The only difference from Crude kits: more charges. Use BL/Mystic if you’re trying to salvage yellows./exotics. Though only time I do this now is for Dark Matter mats for ascended.

o_O?! Map completion doesn’t cost anything. You get a bit(and I really do mean bit) of gold and some karma from finishing hearts. Completing the higher level maps also gives you two exotics plus crafting materials and plus the usual random gem store items. The exotics can have some nice upgrades but even if they don’t you can salvage them for Dark Matter.

Ok so next step. I have whole Emblazed set with runes + Pearl weapons with sigils. I only need rings and earrings from laurel vendor + backback(from i don’t know who). But…

I would like to have set for dungeons(i have it) and WvWvW so my next request to you are tips about making gold. I was watching a couple of videos and i didn’t find something interesting.

I have read few threads and i found only a text about trains in Queensdale and Frostgorge Sound but it is boring as hell and for a short period of time. Are the crafting professions profitable? I was wondering about farming T6 mats but i have only 80% MF.

“Emblazoned” is just a name for one of the armor skins. Doesn’t have to do anything with stats. As other people suggested, berserker armor is most used and best in pve.
You should already know that berserker has following stats: Power, precision, critical damage. Armor with such stats is available on tp, you can get it with tokens from dunegons like “Citadel of flame” and “Crusible of eternity”, you can craft it, loot it from enemies etc.

As for the gold and t6 mats… Farming t6 mats is… well not really much more fun then champ train. In fact you will get most mats (t5 and t6) from champ farming in frostgorge sound. This is imo the fastest way of getting mats. And maybe gold.
Another good way to make gold are dungeons. Citadel of flame p1+p2 will take you max 30 min to finish and will give you about 2.5g + loot. Another pretty fast dungeon is Crusible of eternity, you can do all three paths in about little more then an hour (depends on group). So that’s another 4.5 gold + loot. (btw CoE gives quite a lot of loot in comparison to other dungeons and also since it’s lvl 80 dungeons it can drop some nice stuff like t6 mats.

Also, i have nothing against rangers, but the truth is you will have a hard time finding “speedrun groups” for dunegons, if you’ll want to do those once you learn the dungeons.

Oh and another nice way of making gold is gathering mats in open world – chopping trees, mining ores… the most profitable would be orichalcum ore and ancient/orrian saplings.

There are other ways to make gold, but i think these are most popular atm, and probably best.

an advice: don’t rush with content too much, take it easy, nothing in pve is really “must have” except exotic gear is highly recommended for dungeons. Asc are really not needed. And the rest is just cosmetic stuff.

Have fun!

Salvage everything up to yellow, but use a Mystic Salvage kit for lvl 68+ yellows, and sell on the TP yellow equipment below that level, as ecto won’t drop on salvage. You can sell low level greens if you want as well, but it doesn’t make too much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Doesn’t really matter what you use for the others. The materials from salvage are generally around the same cost as what they’d sell on the TP.

Also, for what you sell on the TP, 5% is a listing cost deducted immediately from your wallet, and 10% is deducted from the profit after the sale is complete – if it doesn’t sell and you need to relist at a lower price, you’ll have to pay the 5% again of the new lower price. Because of this the maximum you can earn is 85% of the cost of an item you sell.

Normal yellows are about 31 silver ish at current prices, ectoplasm is about 33 silver. With Mystic salvage kits the average amount of ectoplasm per salvage is 0.9, but if you sell your yellows instead on the TP you get 0.85x because of the listing/transaction feeds. 0.9*33 > 0.85×31. Generally, you will find you need to use more ectoplasm than you can get normally, once you start crafting Ascended/Legendary weapons, backpieces or Infusing your gear (or crafting Celestial Exotic armors for those who want that stat combination), so it is in your interest to generate and keep ectoplasm.

If you already have all the ectoplasm-requiring gear you need, permanently, and don’t intend to create any new characters, then you can start selling your yellows instead.

Exotics – salvage with Black Lion kits when their inset rune is approximately equal to the price of the Exotic. Salvage with Mystic kits when their inset rune is worthless, for Dark Matter – unless the gear costs a lot because of its appearance. Generally you will want to do separate price checks for exotics, there’s no easy rule unlike yellows and below.

Lastly. Unless some troll has created a gap in the pricing, whereby you should adapt accordingly, the best price to sell an item is generally minimum sell price minus one copper or minimum sell price, depending on quantity at that price. The best price to buy an item is the maximum current bid price plus one copper.

Do NOT buy material at the minimum sell price unless it’s some kind of emergency… it makes a very big difference in the long run to your finances, as the difference in price can be up to 15-20%.

One from the daily. Ten from the monthly so that is about 1 and a 3rd per day.
You also get a few additional laurels for every 500 achievement points.
