Just wondering, how does toughness work? Ie, does anyone know how Toughness impacts the damage you take exactly?
I’m finding it hard to justify getting Toughness over Vitality simply because I can’t mathematically measure the difference. And yes. I’m from THAT game where everything was theorycrafted.. I promise I won’t theorycraft, I just want to understand the stat a bit more. c;
I dont know the answer, but I just came here looking for the same thing. I found a staff with like 31 Toughness on it and it was like night and day the survivability it added to my Ele. Looking forward to answers. I like you had been going vitality just because I could SEE what it was doing (+health)

That’s interesting actually. I may only be a level 10 Guardian but I have been going all vitality when I had the choice and just ignoring toughness. I will rethink my strategy a bit based on what you have said here, perhaps I will take much less damage which would be good (not that I take much now).
According to what the guildwars2guru.com people tested in beta, the direct damage formula is
damage = power * weapon strength * skill coefficient / armor
where armor = toughness + defense.
Condition damage is not affected by toughness.

Condition Damage not being effectedmakes sense, just like every other MMO. Bleeding or being poisoned isn’t really diminished by wearing big plates of armor so :P
But thanks for the info c:
I’ve been told if you plan on doing dungeons, you should invest some in toughness. The way I’ve done it, personally, is to put the power stuff on my armor and weapon and then put the toughness stuff on trinkets, rings and amulet. Seems to work well. I’ve noticed I survive encounters a lot better that way.

For all intends and purposes, the vast majority of your Armor comes from Toughness. As such, there is very little difference in armor types.
