Can you open a trade window to give something to another player? Do you have to be grouped to do it? How do you do it?

I searched GW2 Wiki under as many possible headings as I could think of but got nothing but notes on crafting and illegal gold selling.

There’s no trading as you might be used to from other games. The only way to give something directly to another player is by sending them a mail, but it’s not secure for actual trading unless you completely trust the person you’re trading with because nothing stops you from sending something and the other person no sending anything in return, or the other way around. If that happens, support will punish the person (according to a dev post not too long ago) but whatever gold or items were lost won’t be replaced.

The only really supported way to trade is by using the trading post.

There isn’t a endorsed (by Anet/GW2) way in game for players to trade/sell items between themselves, having said that you can mail items to other players if you want to risk it, selling outside the TP (player to player) is frowned upon because it is very easy to be cheated in some form or fashion and Anet will not help you.

If your wanting to trade with a guildie it’s easy to just put the item in the guild bank and have the other player there to pick it up, if your wanting to trade or gift to another player no gold/money exchange just use the mail system, but if your intent is to sell something to another player circumventing the TP fees you’ll do so at your own risk.

Trading directly with other players is discouraged but can be done via the mail system (if you “trust” the other party to follow thru).

Note that Anet has recently posted it’s policy on this activity and they WILL perma-ban any account that scams using mail trade, but will NOT compensate players that loose items/funds.

It’s also important to note that the 15% fees charged on Trading Post transactions are NECESSARY to remove gold from the in-game economy to hold inflation in check.

Trade via the Black Lion Trading Post. There is nothing a player can provide that the BLTP cannot. It’s secure, can’t be scammed and the fees help the overall economy.

Thanks, all, for the help. This wasn’t some random player – it was my husband, sitting at his computer right next to me, so had he ripped me off, I could have whacked him with my keyboard or not cooked supper or something. <lol>

What I wanted to give him was one of the two Speed Boosts I had. If I had mailed it to him, then, he would have been able immediately to open that mail and retrieve it?

Unfortunately I believe that the boosters are account bound and thus can’t be mailed to another player. You can gift them to another player if you buy them with Gems though.

You probably wouldn’t have been able to send the boosts, as they’re account bound, but anything you mail is received immediately so it’s available to use right after you send it
