Training Manuals--- What are they even for??
You need the manuals to unlock higher trait tiers. Only need one of each per character. Upon usage they also refund your trait points, but you can also refund them by selecting that option from the trainer. Costs much less than the manual.
You don’t get trait points with them. They unlock the trait point tree so you can use the ones you have. Once you have unlocked the whole tree, they are useless to you. Resetting traits is done by paying a fee to the trainer.
You CAN use them to respec, but this is a side effect of opening the next tier of trait points (i.e. you can spend 10 points in each group for the first manual – available at level 11, the next one available at level 40 then opens up 20 points in each group and finally at level 60 you can open up all 30 in each group). As a side effect the trait points are reset so you can go deeper into each level if you need to. However, using a manual once is all you need to unlock the points and then after that you can simply speak to the trainer to respec for a few silver.

Training books are used to unlock the trait tree.
First book -few silvers- (lv11) will unlock trait lines till 10 (Adept Traits):
Second book -1g- (lv40) will unlock trait lines till 20 (Master Traits);
Third and last book -2g- (lv60) will unlock trait lines till 30 (GrandMaster Traits).
Using a book will reset the previously chosen traits, so have to put them again! Also you must buy them in order to use the last one.

Just in case you don’t know, you must double-click the book to “use” it. Just buying it does nothing. From your OP I think maybe that’s the issue?

No, if you read it again you’ll see I literally said I double clicked it. I think I understand it though now thanks

This is a perfect answer. Thank you very much. I must have already used one and forgot about it, because I’ve already got 11 or 12 trait points. Thanks man!
You get trait points every level once you get to level 11, maximum 70. You spend them at the trait tree which you unlock with the manuals.
Here, read the wiki.

This doesn’t pertain to my question at all. Not even in the slightest. I’m aware of what a trait point is or I wouldn’t be asking this question. I thought I left the elitist pigs behind in WoW, but I’m slowly realizing that isn’t the case.
Lighten up there Hoss. People have told you what they are used for and I merely pointed you to a wiki page that has all the details including a link to training manuals.
And what was your question again? Lets see.
I got trait points without buying an Adept Training Manual.
You start getting them, one per level starting at Level 11. At level 80 you have 70 of them.
I then bought one under the impression that I’d be unlocking 10 more trait points to use. I’ve clicked and double clicked and everything else and all I get is a little sound. No trait points, no trait reset, nothing.
You were mistaken or misinformed. They are used to unlock traits you can spend the points on. No additional points.
A couple people said that you use the manuals to respec, but that makes no sense.
When you use a higher level manual, besides unlocking additional trait levels it removes all of your assigned points so you can select again. So it is a respec of a sort but it’s primary purpose is to unlock the additional higher level traits.
There is a dialogue option when you talk to your trainer to reallocate your trait points… Sooo…. what exactly are these manuals used for? So far, I know they don’t work for respecs, and I know they don’t unlock spendable trait points.
So here we are again.

It’s easier to point players to the answer than paraphrase all the details here.
Perhaps you are mixing up Traits with Slot Skills. There is no respec on slot skills and skill points. But skill points are unlimited, you get one every level and then there are the challenges around the maps and the occasional skill scroll.

well at this point I’ve figured it out myself. unfortunately i also figured out that the ranger class in itself is flawed and underpowered specifically in pve. I’m sorry i’m just a bit heated after being called a “huntard” in my latest dungeon. Wasted 60 hours of my life grinding a char that isn’t welcome in dungeons.

That’s a PUG for you, since you said that you came from WoW you must be fairly familiar with this.
Rangers might need more love, but they’re still pretty useful in dungeons (wonder how many times those ungrateful people have been saved by the pet revive) and their damage/support isn’t that bad.
If you are having that much trouble (or anger) getting a group that accepts rangers just get into a guild, groups in there are… “more forgiving”.

Don’t fret, soon there will be a LFG tool in game and hopefully you will be able to avoid the idiots who insist that everyone play the same way, spec the same things, have the same armor, etc. simply to minimize run times in dungeons.
There is little reason to grind a character to max level as quickly as possible in this game. You tend to miss out little nuances in the profession. Combinations of traits with weapon and slot skills that can add to a party rather than solo play.
Haters will hate. Nothing you can do about it.

I’m VERY familiar with this. The only difference is that in wow I was able to make changes to my hunter and increase my dps. I would typically sit at the top of the dps meter. The thing is that I like hunter/ranged classes. I enjoy that style of combat. The problem is that there are actual flaws in the ranger class. For example: the entire time my pet is running between me and the enemy, i’m at 60% dps. Then when/if the pet dies it runs back to me and I’m back at 60% dps… Its a design flaw.
Actually I am in a guild. I was called a “huntard” by a guildie lol. Pretty awesome.

That will be cool. I was actually taking my time leveling up though. This game just gives you a ridiculous amount of ways to generate xp. Honestly though, I’m pretty discouraged by the whole thing. I’ll probably be taking a good long break from this game before I decide if I want to keep playing.
Thanks for your help, and sorry I called you an elitist :P
Argh… PUGs are the worst. I’ve had one good experience. After the next 5 or so were horrible I ended up joining a guild and only do dungeons with my guildmates now. And ya, hopefully the new LFG tool will help you avoid the worst PUGs.
Drop that guild and find a new one. If I personally saw a guildmate abusing another person like that, I would be sure to raise hell about it in the guild. Either they get kicked, or I drop all of them. There are very good guilds out there, but usually they’re the quieter, smaller ones who are more selective about how and who they recruit.
Also, DPS in this game is not as straightforward as WoW- you have to take into account damage multipliers, boons, conditions, and self-defense (dodging, saving skills for counters, swapping into more defensive weaponsets or skills). Building pure damage, in not just gear, but traits, weapon skills, and utilities, is highly risky and puts you at the mercy of your group’s competence and luck, since there are neither healers nor tanks. Aiming for balance (forgoing an offensive utility in favor of a projectile reflector or condition remover, for instance) can over the long run be more effective than trying to min/max everything.
I’ll warn also that if you want to be top of the top in DPS, you’ll likely have to melee. Being melee in GW2 carries with it a higher risk, so it pays off by doing more damage. Ranger in particular has a very good damage/offensive support build that incorporates the Spotter trait, traited Frost Spirit, and sword/warhorn.
I would recommend giving melee play a whirl in GW2- I always played ranged classes in other MMOs, but I adore melee combat in GW2 for its activeness. If you don’t enjoy melee, ranged is still a viable option if you’re not worried about min/max. Build and play right and you can put out some decent damage and support. Some other classes that do well with ranged, if you want to try something other than a ranger, are mesmer, engineer, and elementalist.
