Transmute will make item soulbound?
I’ve tried all my transmutes on white items and it’s been fine.

It may be related to this, from last update.
“Transmuting weapons now preserves the higher rarity of the two items.”
I have not tried it, but I assume that the stones can’t tell the difference between weapons and armors.
It still works. I transferred starter helmet and pauldrons to my Guardian the other day.
It warns that the item will be soulbound, but when the transmutation is complete, it becomes account bound.
I have been trying to transmute some items myself and for some reason i no longer get the message saying it will become account bound instead it immediately soul binds it. I have been wandering why they don’t allow us to just account bound items as we see fit while maintaining the equipping rules for any particular gear. I think the new rule that Teofa quoted is indeed correct and for items of high lvl you may find you have problems getting items to transmute into account bound.
It will say the item is soulbound, but you’ll still be able to bank it and use it on another character. My thief hood I’m using on my ranger did that, but worked fine anyway.

I JUST did this with my ranger. Made a throw away thief to get the hood, transmuted it to a basic white medium armor mask, then again to my ranger’s level 80 mask. Just gotta get the basic thing in the middle.
It has to be transmuted to a white or blue one, hasn’t it?
I thought a green item (and above) would not work.
Last evening I successfully managed to get a faction armour piece from a different faction onto one of my characters.
I wanted the Vigil medium boots for my ranger, but my ranger is in Whispers. However, my guardian is in Vigil, so my guardian bought the medium boots, these were soulbound to my guardian at purchase.
My guardian then bought basic (white) lvl 80 medium boots off the TP. Using a crystal transmute, just the Vigil boot skin was transmuted onto the basic medium boot stats. This resulted in the Vigil basic boots now being account bound. This might work with basic (white) boots from a lower level, but figured it best to stay with lvl 80’s all round. Only a few copper difference in price anyways ..
The guardian placed these boots into the bank. I swapped to my ranger, collected the boots from the bank, then using another crystal transmute, transferred the Vigil basic medium boot skin onto the exotic medium boots I already had with the stats and rune I wanted. Now, the Vigil medium boots were soulbound to my ranger.
The key to this working is making sure the right character is doing the transmuting at the right time. If my guardian did the final transmute, then the boots would have been soubound to the guardian again, ruining the entire effort.
I have the Whispers Staff on my Ele, who is actually in Vigil. I did it like a week ago with a cheap white staff I bought on the TP.
God I wish this worked with Mad memories. How can a bright blue guardian look good with a burning red book on his back? When I have a fire ele and a green colored necro to use the books instead.

A guildie transferred the flaming Mad Memories from her Ranger to her Mesmer, so it can be done. I think she had to transmute it twice. Unfortunately I don’t know the details of how exactly she did it, other than it failed the first time.
