Pretty easy, i have a friend i’m trying to get into GW2, will be playing the trial this weekend.

What class would you recommend for a newbie to the game, to win them over?
I’m thinking warrior?

Warrior is so boring and faceroll. Maybe a Mesmer.

I forgot that is this weekend. I hope they make a trial server for this.

D/D Ele. + There is fun to have with other weaps for ele too. I think that’s one of the more fun builds in the game even though I don’t play it much myself.

Couple votes for mesmer. shocking. When i began my mesmer, it kind of sucked until i got the traits going on it. I figured that’d be the last vote.

She plays a ranger type character in alot of games we play.

Mesmer is hard until about lvl 40 but I thought it was the most fun to level out of my 6 80’s.

Least fun was warrior.

If she likes a ranger type play ranger, it was ok at low levels you don’t really understand it’s failures until you reach higher levels really.

A Guardian is a great introductory class because it establishes Guild Wars 2 is a game without a trinity, and it’s well balanced between physical attacks and magical attacks.

Really, the Guardian doesn’t have any flaws, so it’s a great class to play for anyone undecided. A jack of all trades, but the best at defense.

Depends on the person.

I love playing a ranger, elementalist and engineer but never got the hang of mesmer and find warrior and guardian boring. Other people would probably say I’m mad for thinking that and the ones I like least are the obvious best choices.

If your friend already has experience with MMOs or RPGs give them some pointers, maybe clarify how each class plays but let them pick for themselves. They will have a better idea of what they like, and if they don’t enjoy it they’ll probably be more willing to chalk it up to a bad choice and try again rather than thinking they don’t like the “best” profession so all the rest are obviously going to be worse.

Guardian seems to always attract my friends. Though every friend I know eventually tries a Elementalist after they see me play mine…then shortly go back to something else. :P

I’d say it depends on what the person usually likes in other games though to be honest. Even if a class “sucks” it might still have concepts that people enjoy enough to attract them.

While the ranger isn’t necessarily impressive at higher levels, it starts out pretty well. Also, because of the easy ability to switch weapons, Ranger’s not at all a bad class to show off both close and ranged combat styles. Using Horn, you can even show off a bit of how the Trinity is side stepped.

I found the ranger to be boring and flavorless. It’s just your generic pet class. There’s literally nothing exciting or new about it.

I like the mesmer because no other game offers it. It’s ANet exclusive and super fun.

The problem with the ranger is the pet is so useless.

I loved the ranger class in GW1…you were the interrupt god.

The pet is relatively useless against champions and in dungeons, unless you use spiders, in which case they’re not to bad. In the rest of the game, if you spec right, pets can be very useful.

And yes with stuff like search and rescue on your tool bar, even in dungeons they can be mad useful.

I love my ranger, but….

If your friend likes the way her character looks, a light armor profession might be more fun in the beginning. I certainly liked the armor my nec, mes and ele had much better than my ranger’s or my engi’s. Still do. lol

Food for thought.

I enjoy playing warrior but at low levels it will probably not convince her to play. I enjoyed all the classes at the beginning with thief and ranger being my least favorite. To win her over you should make her go through the personal story. Choosing her starting options is equally important as her class.

To get her hooked she can try several different characters. I would have her try Ranger, Necro, and Engineer.

I think what I find so amusing in this thread is that most people are responding regarding their toon and how fun it is at 80. If the friend is trial playing this weekend, shouldn’t the focus be on low levels?

I have all classes and all races. If your friend likes ranger type classes, or pet type classes, I would suggest they go for those: Ranger I found was very fun just starting out. Soon as I got a bow I was just so happy, I didn’t even care what the skills were. Necromancer with minions, while the pets aren’t as good looking, they can be fun at lower levels too. Even Guardian if she gets enough skill points to get the Sword of Justice is quite fun.

Just saying, the focus should be on lower levels – not saying higher levels aren’t fun, but that shouldn’t be the focus to “win” her over.

Your suggestion has just as much credibility as everyone elses. Ranger was actually the first toon I leveled up, and now I hardly play her anymore.

If she likes rangers then ranger. I’d have been voting for ranger or elementalist anyway if she is only playing low levels. The ele, whilst a bit more complicated has a clearer archetype than a mesmer. Even if she doesn’t get into the whole mechanics, it isn’t hard to understand the basic fire/water/earth/wind magic and just throw different types of fireballs at things.

The ranger is a lot faster to get a grasp on though. You get a bow and shoot. You’ll also have a pet, and hopefully be able to find a couple more to feel a bit of progression (hopefully without the disappointment accompanying the fact they lose their names and become less personal as you progress and switch between them). The ranger will also let her get a feel for the melee weapons as well, with a pretty decent greatsword set for PvE.

That said, let her pick. If she panics and ask you for advice, say ranger, but otherwise she’ll probably enjoy the character creation etc. more than anything else.

That’s funny because after I leveled my guardian I started leveling a Mesmer and it made me want to pull my hair out.

Ranger would frustrate a newcomer because of the broken 1h sword.

Trust me, just go Guardian.
