Q:

I’ve seen people turn around facing backwards instantly without having to move their screen, I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this.

A:

He probably saw it on a stream or a video.

Found an old thread in the thief forums, these were the instructions on how to withdraw with about face without the camera moving. I think this might be what you were looking for, i haven’t tested it yet.

1) Keybind ‘Free Camera’ and hold it
2) Keybind ‘About face’ and press it (no need to hold it down)
3) [Withdraw]
4) Release ‘Free Camera’

You can bind the “about face” key in the settings, this will turn your character by 180°.

You can also move the mouse so you are looking behind your character and tap the move key. Not as elegant as the keybind as your character will take a step in the new direction.

I know about the “about face” thing, but the problem is that it also turns yours screen 180 degrees. Moving the mouse is the same thing I think… Unless you’re talking about something I’ve never done.

ah, i see. You want to about face, but without turning the camera. I think there was a trick with the free camera binding used when about facing.

Are you talking about looking over your shoulder? There is a command called “Look behind” that is super important for PvP and WvW.

How would you know it’s not moving their screens? Wouldn’t you have to be seeing their computer screens to know this?

There is a “look behind” feature you can bind also (if that’s what the OP means). It rotates the camera 180 while held without effecting you current movement or targeting. Powerful option if you can add it to your keybinding scheme and use it effectively.

Looks like that it if only it were simpler :/
Does anyone know a way to make it so I only need to press 1 key? I can’t really get it to work because for some reason my game doesn’t let me do more than 2 actions at once, so if I’m holding my mouse button down, moving or using an ability I won’t be able to do it.

That wasn’t what I was looking for but I never knew you could do that, that’s awesome thanks!

Just a caution. ANet forbids any keybinding where it’s more than one key, one action. They will terminate without warning any account they find doing this.

So you can’t use things like gaming mouses?

You can’t have one key press performing more than one action.

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/news/1043-macros-multi-boxing-and-guild-wars-2/
“Guild Wars 2 players are permitted to use macros as long as the macros are programmed with a 1 key for 1 function protocol.
This means that if you program a macro, it must require one keystroke per action. You may not program a single key to perform multiple functions.
For example, if you Press A and it results in the casting of a single skill, you’re ok. If you Press A and it casts multiple spells, you’re not ok.
You cannot program a macro to performs the same or multiple actions on more than one account at a time.
You cannot program an “auto-clicker” macro that, for instance, opens chests while you play elsewhere.”

Oh so basically you’re not allowed to make it so it puts you in free camera and about face at the same time… -_-
I guess this just isn’t gonna work for me, I have a mac laptop so I already have nearly no keys to work with. I don’t even have anything to bind my 67890 skills to :/

If you have a shortage of available keys, look into a mouse with additional buttons. I use a Razer Naga with 14 buttons on the side as well as the right/left/scroll buttons.

I use the 1 through 12 side buttons for skills, the click on the mouse scroll button for dodge and then WASD for movement, leaving lots of other keys for miscellaneous other functions.

Edit: if you don’t wish to get another mouse, you can set the keys up so that they can be used twice. iirc you can’ use a key such as ~ to layer another use. For example skill one is key number one and skill six is ~1 where you hit ~ then 1 to use skill six. (This is likely not very clear. It’s not something I do, just something I read about but I can try to explain further if needed).

Yeah I’m not too sure what you mean, if you don’t mind could you explain it further?

Ok I had to research it a bit. What I was trying to talk about was Modifiers. The modifier that this game allows is shift.

For example, go to Control options where you assign keys for skills. Double click on the spot where you assign the key for the Healing skill. A panel will appear. Hold down Shift and 1 at the same time. It will then have Shift + 1 in that spot.
To use the Healing skill press Shift and then without releasing shift, press one.

If you are short of keys, this allows any key to have 2 uses. In this case, key one will be weapon skill one and (with shift) the healing skill.
