Story missions are not timed. You get that message no matter what you do on a Charr character. It’s to progress your story. Essentially while you were doing the intro mission other troops got slaughtered. It’s not your fault, but your higher ups need someone to blame and chose you.
First of all, you didn’t have to do it in a certain amount of time. The story path you chose, you get reamed, because being reamed is part of the story. If you made different choices during character creation, you’d have a different response from your superior. So yeah, there’s no way on your personal story path to not get reamed. It’s fine. Carry on, soldier.
You’ll get the hang if it. It’s not that hard. And while it’s different than any other MMO out there, if you just play it for a while, you will get the hang of it.
I’m sure others will be around with links to some nifty new player stuff that I can never find in a minute. lol
Edit: Ninja’d x 2 lol
Back in the day, computer games came bundled with 50+ manuals explaining everything that could be done ingame, times have changed, the internet made manuals obsolete, youtube, wikis, dulfy, etc, can be searched with Google and all of your problems have a large chance of going away.
Some mechanics are different in this game, but if you have played videogames before you will find that the basics remain the same, so dont fret , you will get the hong of it, and if its up your alley, you will have one of the most engrossing gamings experiences ever!
so take it easy and have fun! there really is no need for tutorials or manuals!

Well there is the players helping players forum, GW2 Wiki, Dulfy, The Official guide you can purchase, and pretty much anywhere ^^
The PHP forum is for specific questions. I have a lot of questions.
The GW2 Wiki is for finding everything about a specific subject but using it as a tutorial is very clunky.
Dulfy is like the GW2 Wiki except less in it and less organized.
I don’t want to pay money for an official strategy guide if I can help it.
Doesn’t anyone know of anything that fits what I need?

Ah, OK. Thanks everyone for clearing that up.
Don´t worry about timing.
The UI will tell you quite obviously when you have an actual timer running. And to “spoil” the surprise, this usually happens at the end of gather events(the buckets on the map), AKA “kill 12 rats and bring them to me” quests in other MMOs.
So everybody who´s still out there gathering has enough time to run back and offload his stuff.
Actually Dulfy, though less organized, is a lot more detailed, and specific than Guild Wars 2 wiki.
Just my personal opinion, but you will have much more fun without a guide. Much of the joy of this game is exploration, and I don’t mean just the map. You can always ask a question in chat (if you are really stuck), most people in the community are really helpful.
There is, also, the online ‘manual’ that ArenaNet provides.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/manual/
It’s pretty basic, but it’s free! Lol.
Welcome to Tyria, I hope you have many pleasurable experiences and stay for the long haul. /waves
ooops, manual is already listed…sorry
Haha, wow, thats a pretty intese mail :p
The first personal story mission is: complete a renown heart.
In your 30-45 minutes o playing ou probably conpleted a heart by accident(or on purpose!), which triggered the first personal story mission.
@tutorial: the beauty about gw2 is thakittens very forgiving, you can play howver you want and youll learn everytjing along the way.
Id recommend joining a friendly guild, so you can ask them questions whenever, aswell as being less lonely on your adventures.
Cheers,
Alissah

No. Best Guide = Reading comprehension and common sense. But right now the mmo community seems to consist mostly of people who want to be spoonfed.

Well that is pretty harsh lol. I didn’t need a tutorial when I started, didn’t even know about dulfy and all that. After hitting 80 in a little over a week, getting full exotics in a month, maxing 2 crafts on 2 characters, I knew most the basics. Heck I made my first 20 gold at level 34 by farming an event. Not everyone can just pick up and play though, some people do better with instruction of guides, and theres nothing wrong with that. My personal way is just learning by myself, I find my own ways of making 8-10g+ an hour, farming items, and finishing quests/events. With 12 alts, 2 80’s and another 2 almost there and 4 mid levels I find it easy to figure out pretty much anything from experience. But I wouldn’t call everyone spoonfed, some maybe, but again nothing wrong with asking for help or guides. That is what we are here for, and part of what makes a good MMO.

A lot of resources have been stated, but I’m missing the best resource for an MMO: Join a guild!
Being in a guild with friendly, experienced and helpfull people helps a lot to understand and learn to play the game. You can use map chat, or go to the looking for guild forum here to find a nice guild that you like.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
