Commander on Desolation.
[Tao] for life.
The title says it all.
I find that the majority of new players don’t know much about combo fields and how they work. I think that the player base would benefit largely from a simple tutorial. I can’t begin to count the amount of times I have decided to PuG and they have gotten upset because I put down a combo field (for example, Wall of Reflection, Guardian Skill, Light field) at a boss fight to help clear conditions and grant retaliation.
(I get complaints from them saying “there are no projectiles why are you wasting a Wall of Reflection”, I don’t blame them, they are just most likely unaware of what the combo fields do)
The same goes with defiance, clearing stacks of it is vital in some fights, yet many players don’t know how or what it does, or what moves can be used to remove it.
There are quite a few other things that many people don’t understand mechanics for, feel free to list ones that you know of.
:)
Combo fields yield different bonuses when used effectively.
Combo fields are effected by different finishers, such as Blast finishers, Leap finishers, Projectile finishers and Whirl finishers.
Blast finishers create Area effects, granting boons to more players.
Leap, projectile and whirl finishers usually only result in boons for oneself and conditions for a single target, however some provide healing and condition removal to other players.
Dark – Area blindness, blindness, life steal. (Examples, Shadow Refuge, Well of Suffering)
Ethereal – Area chaos armor, chaos armor, confusion. (Examples, Chaos Storm, Vortex)
Fire – Area might, fire armor, burning. (Examples, Ring of Fire, Combustive Shot)
Ice – Area frost armor, frost armor, chill. (Examples, Frozen Ground, Frost Trap)
Light – Area retaliation, retaliation, remove condition. (Examples, Symbol of Wrath, Wall of Reflection)
Lightning – Area swiftness, Dazing strike, Vulnerability. (Examples, Static Field, Lightning Cage)
Poison – Area weakness, weakness, poison. (Examples, Choking Gas, Poison Grenade)
Smoke – Area stealth, stealth, blindness. (Examples, Black Powder, Smoke Screen)
Water – Area healing, healing, regeneration. (Examples, Healing Spring, Healing rain)
Clearing Defiance.
‘’Immune to crowd control. Crowd-control skills remove stacks of defiance’’
“Defiance is an effect that grants immunity to most control effects. It is caused by Unshakable, an ability possessed by most champion and legendary rank enemies.”
“When a creature with the Unshakable effect is successfully affected by a control effect, the creature will gain a minimum of 3 stacks of defiance, but potentially many more depending on how many players are nearby, based on event scaling. Stacks of defiance can be removed with additional control effects, and once all stacks are removed, the creature is vulnerable to control effects once again, and the cycle repeats. When no stacks of defiance are present, a control skill can apply control to the creature, but it will also apply defiance, preventing further crowd control from being applied until removed. For example, interrupting will have no effect unless no defiance is present; if no defiance is present, the creature can be interrupted but this will immediately apply more defiance.”
Removing defiance helps in interrupting skills, and allow you to move the boss to a better position.
Some moves/effects that remove defiance are:
Daze, Fear, Float, Knockback/Push, Knockdown, Launch, Pull, Sink, Stun.

Absolutely this game needs a tutorial in how to use combo fields and even how to dodge. I would go as far as to say its badly needed. However this has been mentioned several times since launch and has never been implemented.
Yeah, It’s a shame.
But even if it’s not implemented, we can still list useful information for people who wish to learn.
:)
Surely the players who truly wish to learn would RTFW (read the kitten wiki)…
;-)
That’s what you’d hope, But unfortunately that isn’t the case all of the time.
xD
True, I only started playing in Jan this year and the wiki has been a great resource…with a working search no less (unlike the forums).
Saved me from spamming map chat with such gems as “y dere no boar” in Queensdale…
Yeah, the wiki is great for information. But they may not understand it completely in some cases, which is where the forums are good. Players can simplify it and make the information more comprehensive for them.
Yep, very good point indeed – hopefully more players ask for help on the forums rather than in game. It’s not always possible to provide a detailed answer in chat especially when the chat gets suppressed…
:-)
That’s exactly what I was hoping to achieve with this topic, If you can think of any useful tips for new players on certain mechanics that aren’t well known, It’d be great if you could share them, Maybe even some tips for dodge rolling.

Heh, will do, but I’m probably not the greatest authority on dodge rolling…
