Q:
Upgrade: GTX 970 or R9 390 ?
Because GW2 is more CPU based game, they both will run the game at min 60 fps if your cpu is strong enough. Im using i5 4460 and gtx 960 2gb on 2560×1080 and my fps drops below 60 only in big SM zerg fights. I hope this is helpful enough. Unless you are using a 120/144 hz monitor, or playing at 4k resolutions, you are not going to have any troubles with GW2.
In general a 390 is a better choice imo. It’s generally a bit better in terms of price:performance, will be better at higher resolutions if you upgrade your monitor in the future, and I personally think it’ll have more support going into the future

390 or 390X?
Cause the 390X makes my MSI GTX 980 Ti Lightning look expensive, and is biting at the heels so to speak in regards to performance.
Ah yeah the stats in my sig. 4001 x2 = 8002 MHz. That’s the memory clock.
MSI GTX 1080 Sea Hawk EK X 2xSLI 2025 / 11016 MHz, liquid cooling custom loop.
Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB. HTC Vive.

The MSI R9 390 and the MSI 970 cost exactly the same so it’s pure performance decision.
Which of those two gives better fps in game? Which one can give better performance when there is a zerg vs zerg situation?
It’s irrelevant what resolution i ‘ll use, obviously i’m not going for 4k. there are two common resolution 1080p, 1440p. I know that the game is CPU bound but for now my CPU ain’t going to change anyway.

Neither one, and the reason for that
the game is CPU bound
and
It’s irrelevant what resolution i ’ll use

So what would u buy between those two?
The R9 390. It’s faster, and it got double the amount of vram. On the other hand, the nvidia card uses less power.
A 390 for sure. Even the power draw difference is pretty much negligible in actual dollar terms

I’d get the 970. But that’s just me.

I’d also go for the 390, the bit rate and the vram will make difference in the future.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
