Using a Black Lion Chest
You double click the left mouse button on it when you have both the key and the locked chest in your inventory.

Also, what “key” symbol are you talking about having dragged the key to?
The key will not get destroyed unless you agree to its destruction by hitting the “yes, destroy it” button on the the pop-up destroy confirmation box that immediately comes up upon trying to destroy something.

You can double click the key or the chest so long as both are in your bags. Then you double click on the newly created unlocked chest to get the stuff.

This is no longer correct information (since the patch that changed the BL Chest image). Now, when you click on the key or the Chest (with both in your inventory), a new dialog window pops up and you have to click on a confirm button to actually open the chest and then you have to click on accept to get the displayed rewards. Note there is also a convenient button on this dialog that takes you straight to purchasing more keys in the BLTP.

Well ok, I did leave out the new UI step but I’m pretty sure when I opened my 15 chests recently I didn’t have to do a zillion clicks for each one, just hit the Open Another button on the UI.

Seriously?, you described the old method and I corrected your mistake….nothing personal in it, I just wanted to not confuse the OP with outdated instructions.

Hmm, I think you’re right. I just processed the new UI in my head to be a fancy-schmancy way of doing the same thing I’ve done all these years. Though once the UI pops up it’s pretty obvious how to open the chests, and you can in fact do repeated openings without closing the UI.
