I’ve been having trouble using the number keys for combat and have been trying to use the small keypad to the right instead. However I’ve been having trouble actually getting it to work!

Any suggestions?

Try rebinding to something not numbers that is easier to reach. I moved my 7/8/9 binds to Z/X/C and after the first couple hours of getting used to it I’m finding it a lot more comfortable.

True that would make it a bit easier, although I see definite advantages to being able to use my right hand for all the binds.

There is that. I do have the skills set to the numpad as a secondary keybind, but mostly my right hand is more busy controlling the camera (& I got myself a simple gaming mouse with 2 buttons on the side which I used for the 1 attack and the heal, to limit the strain from engineer grenade spamming). The times I use it most are for my elite skill, which is the only one I haven’t managed to otherwise find a good bind for.

I apologise if this is a stupid question but have you bound the skills to the number pad keys?

The game goes by the key rather than the name/function so 1 at the top of the keyboard and 1 on the number pad are two different keys and have to be bound separately. (I actually have all my skills bound to both, although in a slightly different arrangement, as I wasn’t sure I’d like using the number pad at first so I didn’t want to simply overwrite the defaults.)

If that’s not the issue it would be helpful if you could give us more detail on what kind of trouble you’re having. Are you struggling to find a layout that’s comfortable for you? Or do you mean nothing happens when you press the button?

USB device? I use a usb number pad on my laptop, even though it has a number pad built in. There are also other usb control devices.

What I’m trying to do is rather than use the 1-0 that run adjacent to qwerty I want to use the number pad on the right. My trouble is I can’t seem to use the number pad at all in-game, I tested it by trying to type numbers into the chat but had no result. I had a similar lack of result when I went to reassign the keys.

Ooh, I hadn’t realized it was a technical issue over convenience. In that case, stupid question number #2: was(/is) numlock on?
