Let’s say I already used and unlocked a brown dye earlier in the game. What would happen if I found another brown dye and use it? Would I consume it, thus essentially throwing the dye away since I have it unlocked already, or will the game prevent me from using it?

You can’t use same dye on same character twice.

Just remember that dyes are per character so that if you plan to play with multiple characters you need to unlock the dye for each separately. There is no way to see if the dye is unlocked on all of your characters.

Ye, if you used a dye on your character, it will say in the description you already know it, and when double clicking it in your inventory it will give an error message. As frell pointed out you don’t know if another character of yours might need it…
