Was wondering if there is an in-game command or option to sort of “hide” one’s guild affiliation and location for those times when I need some “personal space” or wish to play the game solo without others in my guild knowing that I’m online. Is there some way to sort of become “invisible” in the sense that no one has a way of determining if you are online and playing the game?

There is an invisible status. So if people check the friends/guild list you’ll appear as offline.
To choose the invisible status, go to contacts and if u see the green box with an arrow on the top left click the arrow to choose invisible.

It’s worth noting that the previous living story patch also included an undocumented change to status and social: Status is now preserved when you log back in.

Before, you’d always appear as online the moment you signed in via the loader, regardless of status. So this is actually a pretty major change.

This. Every time you switch maps or characters, the info in the guild roster will be updated, so if someone is watching they might catch on. Also, sometimes the “last online” info is a little wonky, so if you’ve been playing a little while and then decide to go invisible, it might show you were last online several hours ago, which is another indication that somebody didn’t really log out.

Another tip: rep a different guild, or don’t rep at all. This will prevent guildmates from seeing your name in yellow if they run into you (you’ll stick out like a sore thumb at world bosses).

Lastly, you might just want to think about why you’re hiding, and address the issue.

As others already said, change your status to invisible. You can also just not rep that guild when you want to play alone, so that you won’t see any text. You could also hide your chat window or just have it set to show the combat log instead of chat.
