Played a few years ago for a bit and just rebought the game. Never really got into it before. I’m trying to leave WoW and looking for a new adventure. I guess my real question is what makes this game better? and secondly what would be a good beginner class, I made a guardian but realized there’s no tank roll in this game

Well, there’s no gear-treadmill. Once equipped, you are pretty much set.
There’s no monthly subscription; you can come and go as you please, and won’t be left behind.

I like Ranger; it’s a pretty easy beginner profession. Necromancer is good, as well, and has a popular Elite Specialization.

Pro-tip: Do not use your free Level-80 Boost until you have leveled a character to 80 naturally. Take your time; nothing in game is going anywhere. Enjoy the journey.

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.

Thanks! both of those sound good as in WoW I played a warlock and a hunter so. I was wondering if guardian was enjoyable? or does it just get rolled over by everything?

I like my Guardian. It’s pretty popular, as professions go.

Be aware: There is no hard trinity in Guild Wars 2. Only a soft trinity, and each profession can, more or less, play each of the roles.

Besides, you have at least 5 character slots, so you can experiment with several different professions. =)

Good luck.

Anet at least attempts to make everything enjoyable by removing unfun crap and just getting to the point. If it sucks in other games, chances are extremely good they’ve fixed it in this one.

That’s very much the philosophy, and although we don’t know what you like about any game, this philosophy should quickly become apparent. Just as a 100% random example, you can make your gear look like anything you want through the wardrobe system. You don’t need to re-craft or re-loot some high end piece, just change it to what you want it to look like.

Let’s compare a couple of things between WoW and GW2. In WoW the goal is to go through the game and level your character/s to get gear to make them better. In GW2 the goal is to use your skills and abilities to get better. Yes GW2 has a high gear type called ascended which is only about 5% better than exotic. 5% does make a difference though, but unlike WoW gear it will never get any better in the future expansions.

Now the other major difference is low level areas. In WoW they only matter enough to get you past them. In GW2 they constantly matter for some reason or another, because even though you are a level 80 you can still get killed. They also like to add things to any area to keep them all playable no matter what. The reason for this is the level of the area is the level you will be.

One other thing is fighting in GW2 you can team or squad up with others and use skills with one another to enhance the damage. Example an ele puts up a ring of fire and a ranger shoots through that ring instant fire arrows now you have a piercing and fire damage to your foe. there are more like that though. In GW2 you have to disregard your old way of fighting (it can be frustrating) from what WoW is. As long as you have the attitude of learning a new way you will be good. If all you think of is omg the fighting in WoW was better, then maybe this game is not for you. You have to throw away at least in GW2 the traditional MMO design.

Another post mentioned the wardrobe there is a catch to that you need transmutation charges to change the look of your armor. You get 3 free every 28 days you log in. If you need more they are for sale in the gem store. The Gemstore lets you trade in game gold for gems and gems for gold. All gemstore purchases are made with gems. All trading post purchases are made with in game gold.

For me the biggest selling points of GW2 over WoW are the following:

  • Everything is Dynamicly scaled in open world. If you go into a low level area with a high level character your stats will be adjusted to keep you from steamrolling everything (to an extent). on the flipside: If there are a lot of players in an area your opponents will get stronger to match the combined strength of your allied forces. This way content never really gets old.
  • The combat system of GW2 is fundamentally different to the one of WoW. First off: it is action oriented. This means you almost never stand still in a battle. You can actively dodge otherwise impassable hazards or devastating attacks, constantly repositioning to get the best angle on your target. On top of that there is a combo system. Skills of different players can join forces on the fly to create additional effects, from boons to allies over additional damage to bonus conditions on their attacks.
  • Buffs and Debuffs are standartized. A bleed from a Warrior is the same as a bleed from a Thief. The Might (damage buff) you get from a Guardian is the same as the Might you get from an Elementalist. All of these so called Boons and Conditions stack in one way or another. Rarely is an effect lost, even on events with upwards of 80 participants.

Cheers

For me, switching from WoW to GW2 came with a big issue: the change in mentality. If you approach this game with the (for me) typical ‘Get-stuff-done-ASAP’ mentality, you will level up to 80 – get bored and leave again, cause you don’t know what to do. You have to set your own goals, wich can be difficult. There is no advancing raid-cycle that you can follow, nor is there any real progression in gear.

To put it straight: in comparison to WoW, you don’t have these short-term sense of achievement like the thrill when you get new gear. If you run a raid in WoW, there is a significant chance, that you get something out of it. For the most part in gw2, you often ‘just’ get some gold or crafting stuff for the things you do, since random “epic”-drops are VERY rare. It’s more a step-by-step progression to the goal you approach (like building a legenday weapon). So you have to get rid of the ‘character-progression’ mentality and the ‘get-really-cool-stuff-quickly’ approach. This was very hard for me. You have to play this game for fun, and the journey wich comes with it (maybe that’s why people are so nice over all – cause they have fun ^^).

I don’t know much about WoW (only played it a bit on a trial basis about 10 years ago when deciding between it and Guild Wars), but if it has any of that x-stealing, x-camping, there is none of that in Guild Wars 2. Everything is shared, with each player getting there own loot drops/materials/XP/credit/etc.

Simple. No PVE required to PVP.

WoW Legion is a nonstop pve grind no matter which area of the game you like to play. In GW2 you can enter spvp at level one and never have to play pve.
