What Class to Get?

The Rogue.1328

I have a warrior, elementalist and engineer already, and I was wondering what class I should get next. I have had a run with all of the classes so I know ish what their style is, but not that much. I only unlocked weapon skills and went around killing a few things. I was wondering what class I should get next.

I don’t really like tank classes, I prefer to be more dps than tank. I like a mobile playstyle, melee is the best for me but I don’t mind ranged that much. I like to be able to run in and out without being too squishy. I know it sounds a lot like their but I didn’t really like them when I played a bit as them, the initiative system really confused me. I am thinking of a ranger but I’m not sure what pets or builds to go with for a mobile ranger. I think it would be a shortbow and sword and dagger but I’m not sure about that, and I would really like to use a greatsword, because I like greatswords.

Is there a class like that, or should I try and find a ranger build that is mobile and more dps than tank. I can’t think of another class that is mobile like what I want but I am still fairly new so I wouldn’t know much. Thanks for the help if you reply to this.

Try a mesmer. Mobility is where this class shines, IMO. Not as squishy as a thief, and with the proper skills and traits, you can get away from anyone when necessary to reset a fight or simply escape to fight another time.

And they use greatswords to shoot magic beams…
Seriously, greatswords to Mesmers and Guardians are without warhorns…

That’s the hell of picking a class in Guild Wars 2, every class can melee (and have a higher DPS potentional in melee according to the wonderful math done by people in the class forums) and not a single class in this game can tank (if you can hold aggro flawlessly in gw2, congratulations, you just became a god)

My recommendations:
Ranger: Can use a Greatsword, though the highest DPS-potentional seems to lay in the Sword / X (Warhorn has group-wide Fury, Swiftness and Might so I usually take that one, but Daggers are cool aswell.) The one big downside is: Sword Auto-attack 2 and 3 root you whilst using them. So incombat mobility can be tricky. Outside, well, Warhorn and Rampage as one give plenty of swiftness and Greatsword has a wonderful Leap. Not to mention 25% movement speed signet. Longbow 2-5 with Shortbow auto-attack make them decent at range aswell. As for Pets I’d recommend Jungle Stalker (group Might) and another Cat (or Red Moa for group-wide Fury if no-one supplies Fury) for groups and any cat (Lynx is quite sweet) for solo since their DPS is quite nice (just remember to swap pets when they’re low on HP)
Guardian: Decent mobility with Leaps/Teleports (Greatsword 3, Sword 2, Intervention) Swiftness (Staff 3 and Utilities Save Yourselves and Retreat) Though the chaining Blinds and Aegis can feel like a ‘tanky’ job in my opinion. No roots in the attacks except Greatsword 4. For range you’re stuck to Scepter though since Staff has a sad 600 range.
Mesmer: Mobility-wise they might seem a bit meh. No 25% movement signet and no permanent Swiftness (unless Superior runes are used) how-ever the utility Blink makes up for something, a lot actually. Sword / Focus + Sword / ?? seems to fit the playstyle you describe. The Greatsword Playstyle doesn’t seem like your thing (staying at max range is quite important) but maybe I misunderstood your priorities.

Necromancer doesn’t seem like your thing. Might be my lack of interest in my Necromancer that I can’t recommend them though. They’re kitten survivable though with high base vitality and an extra HP-bar with Death Shroud if needed.

If you can’t chose, honestly, roll a dice (it’s what I do) you can always get more character slots (besides you already found out Thief is not your thing.) Be wary though for Ranger since your melee options are limited if incombat movement is very important to you. Also be wary of Guardian if you plan on ranging a lot. It doesn’t seem too interesting (I hate ranged combat with a passion on any class, so once again, I might be extremely biased.)
