Hello, I could use some recommendations about picking a GPU/CPU for the game. Max price range i would say is ~600€.

Is 600€ for just for the CPU and GPU? Or will you be including the other components too?

BlackOcean, it won’t really matter. I’ve got an i7 with an R9 280X. Admittedly the GPU is two years old tech, but I can run everything in this game at max settings. GW2 will reliably crash once or twice per play session (1-2 hours of play) because of the DX9 based engine it runs on.

Erm, that’s terrible advice. If “it doesn’t matter” and he goes and gets an AMD A6, he’s going to hate you forever. It’s true there hasn’t been significant progress in CPU and GPU tech is the last half decade, but that doesn’t mean he can pick any part off the shelf and have a good gaming experience.

Yes around 600€ just for those two, other money is for ssd, motherboard and some additional ram.

At the moment i have i5-2400(3.1GHz) and GTX 560Ti.

Your GPU could do with an upgrade… a RX480 or GTX 1060 6GB will cost you 250-300€ and give very good 1080p performance in most games. For GW2 specifically, you could probably go down to an RX460, RX470 or 1060 3GB as GPU isn’t as critical.

The CPU is a more borderline decision… Intel CPUs have finally got to the point where upgrading from Sandy bridge to Skylake can give noticeable performance increase. Is the increase significant enough to be worth your money?… that’s hard to say. I can’t find anyone who’s done GW2 benchmarks comparing the different generations.
I know they are not using your specific CPU, but this gives you a sense of the improvement you may get:

But if upgrading to Haswell/Skylake gives you other features you want/need (USB3.1, Thunderbolt, M.3, etc)… then by all means go for it. For GW2 or other games, a i5 variant will be adequate… preferably the highest clocked one you can afford. Very few games make use of the hyper-threaded cores of the i7.

same goes for the cpu. always plan ahead and just do a solid purchase. its not like you buy a cpu or gpu every year. well at least i dont. im still using my i7 3770k since it was released 4.5 years ago. only thing ive done to my system is upgrade the ssd and gpu. as the ssd got cheaper from $150 120gb to $150 500gb since i first build my system. and from a gtx 680 to a gtx 1080 because the 2gb vram to 8gb vram made a difference since i also upgraded my monitor 1920×1200 → 3440×1440

A 1070 is about 450€… it doesn’t leave much for the CPU. Unless OP can increase his budget, 150€ will get an i3, which will bottleneck the 1070.

But you’re right, OP doesn’t need to upgrade everything at once. There is nothing in the foreseeable future that will break compatibility of the various components… even the LGA 1511 motherboards look like they will support several generations of the “lake” CPUs

Otherwise, the 1060 is a good price/perfomance compromise. After having seen more detailed DX12 tests, I would not recommend AMD. They may compete in avg fps but absolutely horrid frametimes indicate a broken architecture (ie stuttering).

I run 2500k i5 from intel, and GPU is one of the new fancy 1060 series from nvidia.
GW2 runs like a charm, only world events still neck a little, but then I just drop down the ‘character model limit’

You can’t overclock a non-K Intel CPU.

And I’m not sure if a i7 6700K is any better than a i5 6600K for games… none of the gaming benchmarks I’ve seen show much improvement between the two. The bigger improvement comes from the change from Sandy bridge to Skylake. Each generation improves IPC by ~5-10%, and Skylake is 3 generations ahead. That said, IPC =/= FPS, so I’d still say the value is debatable for games.

are you only playing gw2?
or maybe a few low less intense games?
if you are, than the gtx 1060 is great for you.
if you plan on playing like battlefield, batman, gtav and other graphics heavy games than go with the gtx 1070.

im aware that he has a i5 already but if you notice, he pretty much wants to upgrade both things. plus the i5 – 2400 2nd gen is pci express 2.0 and wont be use the gtx 1060 at its full potential with the pci express 3.0. not to mention the upgrade and speed difference from upgrading to a i5 6600k 6th gen.

That’s probably the most reasonable way to go about it. The SSD by itself will completely change your PC experience (doesn’t improve FPS but will speed up almost everything else hugely)

I mostly play GW2 some CS:GO and LoL, maybe some BF but i can’t be bothered about it too much.

Even if he had a 2500k, which he doesn’t, he could definitely see some gains from jumping to an equivalently clocked 6600k.

OP, if you really want to upgrade grab a 6600k and the best GPU your budget leaves you. In the US you could get a 1070+6600k for $600 but I’m not sure what prices are like wherever you are

Best upgrade would be:
- 6600k, 230-240€
- z170 motherboard, 120-140€
- 8 gb ddr4 +3000MHz, 50-60€
- RX 470 4gb/gtx 1060 3gb, 210-230€.
- 120gb ssd, 50-70€

Put that cpu at 4.2-4.4GHz and welcome to the gw2 own masterrace, where only tequalt, 3 server blob fight in EB drop below 30 fps at high-ultra.

Overall price should be around 700€. If you can wait a little bit more to get the extra cash it will be totally worth it, cutting the budget would require two lower gpu tiers or eliminating the oc in the cpu.

Forget about 1070 or i7, people font count new motherboard and ddr4 required, and nonsense overkill for games like gw2, lol or csgo. You will already fap like there was no tomorrow with a 470/1060 coming from a 560ti.

Thank you all for your advice, prices here are a bit higher but it gives me a direction to go.

I’m on an AMD FX from like 5 years ago. Game runs fine on medium settings.
