Q:
What am I doing wrong?
Ele is the squishiest class the game; we have the lowest HP and armor and survivability is more or less dependent on 30 points in Water. Leveling up an ele is not easy and can be very, very frustrating.
It also takes a lot of practice to get our skills down. Whereas other classes can spam 1-5 to some extent, ele is all about combining skills from different attunements. My typical combo runs through all four attunements (Air>Earth>Water>Fire), uses Arcane Wave, and has a 3-4 second delay before all the damage goes off.
The class has a high learning curve and high risk-vs-reward. You go down very easily sometimes and leveling is not going to be a breeze. But once you get the hang of it ele is easily the most fun and rewarding class in the game.
BTW I would suggest you stay away from D/D and run staff in PvE.
As a warrior i must say also, that i can kill 20 enemies at same time, however it takes 2 kraits to kill me. This (i hope) is said just for you to notice that some enemies are just harder than others.
I’d suggest you to go to the human starting area, since there you can kill more enemies and there’s is less of the harder ones. At least you’ll get it easier until you are lvl 20.

hi. I totally agree with you. When i leveled my elementalist to level 80 alone ,i died so many times that it was discouraging. My second alternate character, a warrior was so much easier that i did not feel the need to even activate trait points until level 41.If
you want better survivability perhaps you can play as a warrior and learn the nuances of the game and pick elementalist as your second character.I found it helpful to update armor and weapons ,amulets ,rings, earrings approximately every 5 levels to keep pace with enemies i was encountering. It took me almost 1 year before I even looked at consumable items that were very helpful like cookies and pies for your level that are pretty cheap that will enhance your survivability.I am currently playing elementalist as my main and i must say I still die a lot.I wish you well and check the other contents of the forum. It was very helpful to me-like elementalist forum .Most
important thing is to play a character that you like and in the playing style that you like.Have Fun and enjoy the game!!!!
And don’t underestimate the need to move and dodge to survive. You say you are new to GW2 and this isn’t an MMO where you plant yourself and slug it out even as a warrior. And Kraits are an enemy that can force you into melee with their grapple so trying to hang back with range attacks can be a problem considering your relative squishiness.
RIP City of Heroes
Dagger offhand doesnt really offer u much protection from sustained dmg. If u find this is something u are lacking focus might be better, the reflect will help if ur faced with projectile-based attks and also the invuln is quite handy.

Very much this. Surviving as an elementalist is all about active play- what you don’t have in raw stats, you make up for in shields, healing, boons, antiprojectiles, slows/snares, and probably a few more active defenses I’ve forgotten.
Here’s some videos- hopefully they help you visualize the above advice.
Level 12 elementalist, soloing a level 16 veteran
Level 50 underspecced glass elementalist versus a champion (this one’s long- don’t feel obliged to watch it all the way through)
Level 80 elementalist soloing a champion
Disclaimer 1: please do not click your skills- it’s a very bad habit that I’ve lately been working on shedding.
Disclaimer 2: all of the videos above were made using my second and third elementalists. Prior to them, I had spent hundreds of hours learning to play my first elementalist, and many, many deaths were involved. It’s all ultimately a matter of practice and persistence, not some inborn ability. I recommend reading http://doodlealley.com/2012/10/10/be-friends-with-failure/ if you’re feeling down- his philosophy is excellent and applies to much more than art.
Also, as previous posters have mentioned, some enemies are harder to face than others, and krait often make the top of that list due to condi spam, pulls, and ranged attacks that hit hard.

Suggestion: grab a friend, preferably someone a little more hardy, and go level up together. He can be your human shield, and you can hurl your magical bolts of destruction on thy enemy.
