What am I missing?
Yo,
I feel the same! I love this game, but running alone can be very boring.. The only events I have run into are small and not really intense.. Could be because I’m only level 10, but not sure.. I do like this game though. Just not sure my ranger class is for me!
If your looking for people to run with I’m always down!
Well out of all the games out there this is probably the one that does the least to try to tell you what to do. For some people when you tell them “do whatever you want/feel like” they find that they actually don’t know what to do. Other games will have quests and it’s basically a checklist.
I generally roam around following gathering nodes. Sometimes I end up on the wrong side of the map from doing that and that is fine. I do the hearts and events as I come across, I generally don’t chase after events. Sometimes it is just wandering around enjoying the sights(obviously not in Orr) while leaving a trail of (naked? O_o) corpses. There are also jumping puzzles and mini dungeon. These are probably more fun without a guide but it depends on personal preferences.
Adventuring with friends is also a lot more fun than adventuring alone.

Having friends is important to the experience. Real player friends are wonderful to have, even those that are far away and only whisper to you.
But they aren’t the only ones. If you want to immerse yourself, make friends or acquaintances with the NPC people too. Many of them have interesting little tales even without an event or a task attached. Some of them will chat aloud, some need to be talked to by you. The Heart Task people and the NPCs involved in the events also have background on why they need us to do what they ask. To me that makes a difference.
What is most important to my experience, however, is being friends with my own characters. They are all eight personalities with their own litle quirks and backgrounds. Very few people ever hear their stories, but they are really for me. When my character feels like a person, everything else around them matters more too.
Some people probably snort at the last paragraph. But here is another way of thinking it: Any good book or TV show has protagonists one cares about. Why should it be any different in a game?
I imagine that the game is different now then it was when I started playing it (at the three day head start). At the time, people were actively running around, learning new things and trying to understand the mechanics and game play, etc. And there were MANY people actively participating on the lower levels, and you sort of progressed with them through out the game.
Every now and then I visit the lower levels and there is not much going on. I can see where is this off-putting to someone new. It’s pretty sterile.
