I hear people mention that they need to get “the chest in the end”… in the context of completing an event or something?

Note that I mean a large lootable chest that is an interactive part of the world (not in PvP or WvW), not a tiny chest icon in the HUD or in my inventory.

Up to now, I saw a lootable chest only once, somewhere around level 15, in a far off corner of the newbie map. And I’m wondering…. are they simply quite rare at low levels… or… have I missed them all…? :-o ;-)

Just wondering whether I should be on the lookout for interactive crates in general. Because there are lots of boxes lying around, I don’t press F on each…

After some events, involving more phases and a champ, often you get a loot chest near where the champ fell.

Some Champion mobs from events and just randomly in the world often spawn chests after dying.

Also, jumping puzzles have chests ‘at the end’.

end chests may refer to a few things

1. on maps, certain large events spawn a rather massive chest somewhere nearby. Things such as the fire elemental, or “world bosses” will do this
2. Dungeons typically have 3 chests. Some dungeons have the final chest after killing the final boss making it “the end chest”
3. When you finish a map or daily/monthly a chest appears near the lower right of your screen, and you click it to receive the rewards. This could also be considered an “end chest” as its the chest at the end of finishing a zone.
4. Most jump puzzles have large splendid chests at the end of them.

If you’re only 15 I wouldnt have expected to see them much unless youve been participating in world boss fights, or doing jump puzzles

To be clear, these chests are often very large and shiny. They stick out like a sore thumb. They often happen after one of the meta events (multi-legged long events with big boss fights at the end)

There are also other random chests tucked away in corners or small caves in the open world. They tend to be protected by a champion grade mob, and are not always obvious.

Many world bosses do spawn chests, but not all.

Hah, yes, large shiny chest is the one. OK, so it’s normal that I saw only one. I saw it after a fight that I casually joined, in a small side cave behind a larger monster or elemental.

Yep, I think the answer you were looking for is: only some few events have such a chest at the end.
