They seem really coveted, what is the main things you make with them/use them for?

Also, same Q with Karka Shells.

Both are mainly used for crafting. Globs come from rare quality lvl 68+ items or high level “salvageable items”, and are used in practically all Exotic quality gear/weapons/rings/amulets.
Karka shells are now dropping like flies due to everyone at Southsun Cove, but gather 1000k of them & you can get – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ancient_Karka_Shell – handy if u have that many handy(but you can get an ascended item through laurels which would be “better” stat wise)

Rare quality trinkets also require ectos to craft.

Ectos are used in borderline everything.

Karka Shells are generally used in the upgrading of Exotic → Ascended gears. But they have a few other uses, like crafting and junk.

karka shells are also used to make 5stat/5AR infusions.
