Hey everyone!
Go the game yesterday and I have been playing around with an asura necromancer for a little while but I haven’t even sunk my teeth into most of the game, and it’s the first MMO I’ve actually played (other than some f2p ones that I played for like a day). It all seems just a tad overwhelming. So what are some tips you have for new players?
Not really looking for anything specific, just anything you think will help anyone who reads this thread.

Thanks guys! Happy gaming

Hello and welcome! I recommend checking out this link:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players/first

Keep moving when fighting.
-many new players are used to the standard MMO style of standing still and unloading your skills. In GW2 this won’t work for long so get into the habit of moving/strafing from the start
Learn when to dodge.
-Lots of enemies have heavy hitting attacks, often with added knockdown, daze, etc. By learning to recognize the animations that signal these attacks (glowing rays is the most common) you can see when to dodge and completely avoid the attack.
Gather nodes.
-Get gathering tools (and keep them up to date). Gathering from nodes give you xp and the crafting skills require quite a lot of mats.
Deposit collectibles.
-In your inventory you can select ‘Deposit all collectibles’ from the cog. This will place all crafting mats you’ve gathered into your bank and free up a lot of inventory space.

Awesome! Thanks for the link and the tip. Just what I was looking for. Have any tips about social stuff, like how to meet new players, where to look , and such?

I definitely recommend finding yourself a guild, you might want to take a look here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/guilds/guilds

For dungeon groups and such there are 3 common ways:
1) Ask in chat in Lion’s Arch for groups (it’s the main hub)
2) Ask in chat in the zone where the dungeon is
3) Use http://gw2lfg.com/ to find or advertise for a group.
4) Ask in guild chat (once you’ve gotten a guild)

For normal groups when leveling it’s probably best to ask in map chat or in guild chat. There are quite often mentions of group dynamic events in map chat so you might want to keep an eye on it for that as well.

When you are exploring low level areas As mentioned gather every node you see. Whether you wish to craft or not those lower level materials are worth a lot of money on the trader. An example is Chili Peppers. Found in the low level areas throughout ascalon (among others). Chili peppers sell for 4-5 silver each as this afternoon. Not every herb node produces them, but at a low level if you sell 2 or 3 of them you’ve paid for your level 10 training book. That’s only one example.

Don’t have 2 professions that use the same materials at the same time (namely, Weaponsmithing, Armorsmithing, and Jewelcrafting to a lesser extent). Often you won’t have enough materials from regular gathering to cover even one, let alone both of them.
Get a salvage kit, use it on whites and salvage items, and later on blues. The mats are usually worth more than the item you salvaged, and it’s a good way to extend the lifetime of your inventory.
Click the gear in the top right and use Deposit All Collectibles. That will put crafting materials that are in your inventory into a tab at the bank, which can be accessed from any crafting station.
Completing a zone 100% will give you some awards. Some greens (they often won’t actually be useful, but they sell decently well at a vendor) a small stack of materials (some of those can be quite valuable) and sometimes Black Lion stuff (which you’d otherwise have to buy using gems).
Fully exploring the 6 capital cities (Rata Sum, The Grove, Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak, and the Black Citadel) will give a decent amount of experience, as well as 3 Basic Transmutation Stones each. This can be done on every character, which effectively makes Basic Transmutation Stones free rather than having to spend gems on them.
Do Dynamic Events when you pass them. They give good money, experience, and karma. Though fights against Champions often take far too long for the reward you get for them, though some of those will spawn a chest afterwards that can give more stuff.

Welcome to Tyria, SirFlintsalot! What server do you play on?

Most tips have already been covered here, but pitching in:

-Take everything you read on the forums with a grain of salt. As harsh as it sounds, there are an awful lot of whiners here who like to blow things out of proportion, and a good number of people in-game (at least on Tarnished Coast) will agree. Try things for yourself- don’t let someone else’s opinion hold you back.
-If someone asks a question you know the answer to in guild or map chat, take the time to reply and, if necessary, explain. Volunteer to guide them, even. Likewise, if someone asks for help with an event and you’re in the area, help out. It’s a good way to meet people.
-If an event is happening, feel free to announce it in map chat.
-Seconding finding a guild.
-Solo champions, starting in the middle levels. You’ll very likely get your face smashed in several times, but it is doable and you will learn a lot.
-Never be afraid to ask questions (politely, of course). This goes for dungeons, too- if it’s your first time, speak up. If the group objects or mocks you, leave them and find another- they aren’t worth your time. This is where having an active guild comes in handy, as guild runs have overwhelmingly been smoother and more laid back than PUG runs.
-If you want to look something up, type /wiki (what you want to look up), without parentheses. This was mentioned earlier, but is worth mentioning again.
-You can talk to, group with, and even run dungeons with people from other servers.
-Over all else, take your time. Explore. Take the world and all its little details in. Have fun. A lot of people blew through to 80 in a week and complained about there being no content, when in fact they had rushed past it all. The endgame begins at level 2.

Technically, this is a guide for starting out in sPvP, but it has a lot of information that can help a new player understand combat mechanics and fundamentals as a whole.

Have any tips about social stuff, like how to meet new players, where to look , and such?

The social stuff is easy: you just have to… be social! Pithy, I know. But remarkably, there’s not much more to it than that. Strike up conversations in /map chat. /say things to the players who have joined in on dynamic events or renown hearts. Just be talkative in general. A lot of people respond to that. Of course, there’s always Lion’s Arch, the social hub of the world.

If you’re looking for players to grind along side, make sure you’re hitting all the dynamic events. Someone is bound to show up and help out. When they do, ask if they’d like to have a partner in crime. That’s probably the most simple way to find a temporary companion. Otherwise there’s Guilds, LFG, and Operation Union. Options a-plenty.

Don’t give up on a class without reaching at least level 20. In some cases they really only start to open up after 40.
