Q:

Just installed the game and downloading the final patch as we speak,
or more like, as I type.

So what’s the race/class that I should avoid, if there is something wrong atm,
like a really boring aspect or a other big downside to it?

I’m not a “goofy” fan, so I probably skip the tiny aliens and furball race.
Any suggestions for a proper main char that’s diverse and fun enough?

First off Asura are awesome, I have an elementalist as my secondary.

Warriors are the most finished class right now.

Race does not matter that much outside Personal Story so go with what class you want and then pick a race for it.

Try out multiple classes each one plays differently so find one the fits you

I am having real trouble with elementalist right now. I hit level 70+ and I started dying very often. I suggest you avoid it unless you are hellbent to play a mage and go against the odds with your brilliant grasp of profession and play.

Desolation EU
Shandaara – elementalist, Liiana Iceclaw – warrior
Sir Edward Ironwing – guardian, Infinius Black – necro

The charr starting area has the deepest development. Asura and Sylvari lands seem a lot less complete to me.

Race, aside from the racial elites, doesn’t matter much in terms of game play. All characters have the same stats.

In terms of first profession to select, I’m going to give a different answer —
You can make one of any character you think you might be interested in. Then go to sPvP area, and actually play it with full level 80 abilities and gear. You won’t be practiced at it yet, but you’ll be able to see what life at 80 will be.

Some professions start slow and get better (mesmer comes to mind as a low damage-output to start). Some professions are better than others if you’re intent on being a stand-in-one-place sort of player.

Suggest Ranger as one that’s most like what you’ve played in other games, very easy to play competently.
