What do I have to sacrifice to get black dye
Here are some close approximations that currently cost less than 1 gold on the TP and the slight tint they may have compared to the “true” color on some materials. Note that dyes show up differently on different armors, so preview using Guildhead or some other means before you buy.
Black
- Pitch (purplish, but really the darkest you’ll get on the cheap)
- Night Shade (bluish)
- Charcoal (gray)
- Midnight sky (indigo)
White
- Frosting (gray)
- Fluff (gray)
- Mithril (brown)
I would also recommend “White Gold” dye. It is a rare but goes for substantially less than actual White Dye. Additionally, I’ve found that most of the “Midnight XX” dyes (Midnight Fire; Midnight Ice, especially) look quite dark on cloth. They are also cheaper rares than Black or White.
For white you can try blue ice dye and for black iron.
Watch out people, they will only reduce the drop rates again if you talk about dyes.
My 1st character (on release) has more dye than any of my other toons that I have created including the some of the harder to get ones. Since the weekend shores event drop rates for dyes (and for anything useful for that matter) have been reduced significantly (no data—just comparing my inventory from pre-event characters). Grinding for just about everything is the new norm I guess.
The ideas for using approximations to achieve virtually the same effect are great suggestions.
Not sure the going price, but Fog is a good replacement for white.
Iron is a nice dark-blue that is darker then ebony.
Icing also works for white, it was my go-to until White showed up in a dye pack I bought in the gem shop. Iron does pretty well for black, though on some metals it gets very reflective blue. It’s decent on most leather, though.
The various Midnights are very dark, albeit with strong hints of color. Such as Midnight Yew, which has a lot of green in it but looks black from a distance on the right materials.
I still want actual Black (or Abyss). It makes such good accents to an outfit.
Yes, not only have overall dye drop rates dramatically altered since launch (both up and down), the drop rate for rare dye, and to some extent uncommon dye has been nerfed recently.
Abyss dye dropped for me around 2-3 weeks after game launch. I didn’t know at the time how sought after and valuable it would become, otherwise I would never have activated it. I don’t even use it anymore. It is actually a rather boring dye and you see it around too much. Same goes for that white dye (Celeste).
I had a nice blue dye (Sapphire) drop for me a few weeks ago, and this is now my main armour dye with Mahogany and Adobe for trim and leather parts. My small fringe areas are a yellow dye (Lemon). This makes for much more distinctive kit, without being garish. I can actually see my character now in zergs of black kit … The only rare dye in this lot is the blue Sapphire.
My advice, is look at the dye selection you have based on hue, not set type. Experiment with the dyes you have, and I am sure you can come up with something more original and interesting than black, grey and white, or any equivalent.
If you really think you are still missing something, then go to the TP and find a common or uncommon dye that fills the hue you are looking for.
EDIT: just wanted to add my leggings are blue ice …

If you’re game you can test your luck at bulk buying unidentified dyes on the TP. I found midnight ice dye (I can’t really tell the difference between that and abyss) and celestial white (whiter than plain white) from those, granted I found those not bought over TP.

Midnight fire is absolutely pitch black on cloth. Less costly than Abyss maybe, but still not cheap.

I wish midnight fire looked good on medium armor. It makes it a dark brown x.x

yes, i bought Midnight Fire for my ranger and oh dear…
sadface.
I found Midnight Fire was ok for trim, but rather terrible for anything else on my ranger. This is why I got tired of all those dark and ‘midnight’ type dyes.
Come on people, use a bit of creativity!!
