What do you do with excess skill points?
Forge mystic weapons (needs 50), collect them for the legendary (needs 200 + on average 143 more).
As it’s already been stated, some of the Mystic Forge “gift” components cost Skill Points. Every level above 80th also grants +1 Skill Points, which is why many high level characters are still xp grinding.
The “Mystic” series of Exotic weapons are the main focus for newly 80th characters that have Skill Points to burn. Beyond that, you’re looking at the Mystic Forge recipes that make unique items (such as Legendary weapons and the Triforge Pendant).
What everyone else said.
I am happy skill points have a use now. In the first game they served no purpose after you got all the skills you needed. You would keep leveling and getting all these skill points and did nothing with them.
Good job ArenaNet with giving SP a purpose!
@Joey,
I dunno when you played GW1, but in the original game you could use them since the release of Eye of the north for e.g. consets. Later on the envoy weapons where added that required 15 skill points each.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

Wow never knew those existed. Shame on me!
You can also use your skill points in mystic forge recipes to upgrade crafting components like silver>gold, T5 fine mats>T6 fine mats etc. These recipes can generally turn a proffit of anywhere from 10-60 silver per skill point if if you are doing them in massive amounts and hit the average conversion rates.
I do not use my extra skill points, hoping that if the level cap is raised, the Skill points will reconvert to exp, allowing me to gain some levels when i log in to play.
