I current have a set with mostly exotic magi and some cleric’s.

I want to start working towards ascended gear, but I don’t know what the most general-purpose gear would be. I don’t know exactly how necessary magi’s is, since I’ve heard people say that it heals way too much to be practical. Also, I’ve personally felt that the staff healing is very weak, even with magi. So I’m not sure if I should work towards magi / viper / berserker.

The stats on the ascended armor can be switched, but I’m also worried about trinkets, weapon acquisition, possibly nightmare runes, etc.

So what’s the most general-purpose set I should work towards?

I can’t advice you on what build you should use, but here are a couple builds: http://qtfy.enjin.com/ranger. I was adviced to go for Power Druid, but I don’t know if that is the generalist of these builds.

Getting ascended in general is hard, but getting ascended rings is very easy, you get them by doing fractal dailies (they either drop from the chests or you buy them with the pristine fractal relics). So even if you don’t know what build to go for yet, you can already get some rings.

Healing druid with magi’s gear is only recommended for raids and eventually high level fractals. For everything else it is better to use a more offensive oriented build, so either berserker or viper’s gear. Power builds are slightly better for open world PvE, especially in low level areas because of the better burst (but literally anything works there) and offer more utility/support in group content. Viper has better dps in longer fights. Just take what fits your personal preference the most.
