This question pop up to me when I do some zerg. Sometimes I hit the mobs but when they die, I didn’t get the exp let alone the loot.
So what counts here? Is it the quantity of your hits or the amount of damage that you deal to the mobs? Which will grant you the “kill counts”?

Depends if you’re talking about trash mobs or bosses
In the latter of the two, usually yes, you have to do a certain amount of damage to get credit for it
But as for trash mobs you get exp for the kill if you damaged them at all
The more damage better chance for loot

Yeah I’m talking about the trash mob. Sometimes when I hit them ( I only managed to hit them once or twice before they die because too many players hitting them ) I didn’t get the exp at all, let alone the loot. Maybe it’s a bug then?

So I just did some research and found out that I don’t get the Exp if I only hit them once. I get the “kill counts” when I hit them twice or more. Though I’m still not sure is it the number of hits or the damage dealt that counts..

Perhaps anyone got the answer?

I’m fairly sure from experience that it’s a threshold of damage that you need to do to a mob in order to get exp and loot from it. It can be one big hit or a couple smaller ones, but if you don’t do X percentage—and what that percentage may be, I’ve no idea!—then you’re not credited with the kill. I’d imagine that would be to cut down on people hitting something once and then tabbing to the next without killing it, which could be fairly bad in a situation where less players were involved. That’s just my opinion, of course!

I believe it is a certain amount of damage, not just based on opinion, but some slight testing done with myself and a friend. We were farming a specific creature for roughly an hour, and he kept complaining anytime I come to farm with him he gets less loot. Well when I’m with him I get way more loot, specifically the crafting material we were farming.

So we decided it must be damage based, because as an Ele, I have a ton of AOE underwater damage that does a ton when I have my MF gear on (We both have full sets of the same MF gear btw, so this cannot be taken into account). So usually we gather the mobs up and I spam them with my high damage stuff and wipe them. Now, we always make sure he gets a fair amount of damage on each, kiting them around (He’s a thief with a speargun) and at least a few hits on each on, and I typically take their remaining 3/4 health with my combo I use underwater for farming.

Like this, I get way more of the scales we are after. So we decided to test it. I started using lightning, which is more CC than damage really and made sure to hit less often, and guess what, he started getting more scales than me. We did this for a bit and switched back, doing this for roughly 15 minute intervals between switches. Whoever was doing most damage was getting most loot. Now, this could just be a huge coincidence but I think not personally.

There has been another situation where I came with a guild member to farm something because he said he was getting crazy drops because they respawned a lot and quickly and were fairly easy kills, now, this guy is a warrior with heavy damage build (No MF even, just a single MF booster he was using while my MF goes over 100%) So we start farming, for 30 straight minutes we go at this, and on land, an Elementalist cannot do sudden burst damage, as all their heavy hitting skills take a second to land or channel typically. So because of this, he was just ripping through them, and at best I manage to get a couple Masterwork green items, while he was getting rares, and several at that.

From my personal experiences and a few various tests it seems pretty obvious it is damage based.

Both Celissa and Sisho are right, I just did more further research and the result is :

It’s the damage you dealt that will make the kill counts, how many do we need? All I know is that I get the kill counts when I hit above 1500damage on mobs at Orr map.

And what Sisho mentioned about more damage means more loot, well I think this could be an issue. It will be absolutely unfair for player who is going for defense build. I hope some Anet guys could review this.

Thus taking this discussion more further :

How the contribution counts on Dynamic Event?
Is it the same damage contribution rule?
Then what about player who prefer to support and reviving allies? that must count to something?
