So I was in Rata Sum just now minding my business at the bank when I heard a strange thumping sound behind me. I turn around to see someone in an idle pose with a staff periodically thumping it against the ground, no big deal until I clicked on them and saw it was a ranger. “A ranger with a staff?” I thought incredulously. I then looked closer and realized the ranger was under the effect of an unlabled “transformation” and the creature that stood there was not of any player race, or indeed of any race I’ve yet seen or heard of on Tyria. I managed to snap a screenshot before they left, which is fortunate as I failed to catch it’s name to ask directly.

So I must ask you all, kitten am I looking at here? A visitor for the planet of the apes? Sasquatch’s blueish shaved cousin? The fabled blue bookah of legend?

Yes, and it was added in the NA version with the bazaar of the 4 winds that had chinese style decorations added to it.

The monkey king mini is pretty cool too with some interesting movements.

Actually, Son Goku is the japanified version of the monkey king’s original chinese name Sun Wukong, and there are other anime based on journey to the west where the main character is named Son Goku as well. The first part of Dragon Ball (as in, not Z) is very loosely based on the story.

The hallmark channel made a sort of sequel to the monkey king story IIRC set in present time, an american scholar was doing studies on the monkey king story and is transported to an alternate dimension where he meets the characters in the story. There’s also another recent movie (forbidden kingdom) with Jackie Chan and Jet Li that deals with the story (Monkey King was turned to stone, a young guy obsessed with martial arts movies finds his staff and is transported to ancient china where he has to get the staff to restore him).

One of my favorite cartoons as a kid, actually, was basically a sci-fi retelling of the monkey king story, something I didn’t realize until I was much older.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starzinger
