What profession for me?
Some may figure out that Thief and Warrior could be melee professions capable of bursting out dmg.
Thief is what I was looking at playing. I wasn’t sure how their mechanics worked. I somewhat imagine them like rogues in other games.
Short answer:
Quick bursts of damage = Thieves, Warriors, Elementalists.
Long asnwer:
Don’t you think that basing your choice purely on random players opinions is a bit superficial? My suggestion is play a bit with every profession that seems to interest you, reach level 10-15 unlocking every weapon set and then try it for a while in structured pvp ( where you are given max level, max stats gear and all abilities). Also keep in mind that while some profession seem to be oriented towards a certain role ( i.e. Guardians are mostly support/meatshields) they can all play all roles to a good degree of efficiency.

“30 fps is more cinematic”

I hate deleting characters. There are only 5 slots and yet 8 professions.

Guardians can dual wield… works best with 1-handed weapon and a torch weapon in the off-hand. Ignore shields.
Well you must have pretty poor decision-making skills to try 5 out of 8 classes and still not find one you like.

I haven’t tried any of them yet. I’m taking suggestions as to what I might enjoy.
Sure, sorry for even trying to help.

I played an enhance shaman and rogue in wow and currently i enjoy the ranger and thief.
Although i would say a a thief with a dagger/pistol + pistol/pistol setup or a double axe + greatsword warrior.

Thanks for the feedback. Thief will probably be my first class
@Wolfheart
If the OP doesnt want to play all the classes to figure out what he likes thats his business. He asked you for recommendations according to what his is looking for in a class. Your other comments are not needed. Give him what he asks for and info that is pertinent, nothing else.
@OP
Thieves Warriors and Eles. In that order. Eles have alittle ramp time depending on what weapons you are using. However, I think a thief would suit you best.
Here’s a tip you should keep close: No matter which class you pick, don’t forget to dodge!
I usually play a caster (I played Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer in GW1. Mage in WoW) but I chose a Thief this time and I haven’t looked back.
Zhaitan: “Challenge accepted.”
All the nice thief feedback. I am absolutely going to roll one.
I’m also sort-of non-hardcore player. I loved Thief and it’s quick to grasp. I find that casters in this game are a little deeper than what they look, but a nice combination is the Guardian, if you like that sort of thing. (Which reminds me the Chaplain or Crusader from other role-playing games)
First, you need to know if you are you playing with a group or solo. Although all professions can solo, some are more survivable at it than others .
I liked the Thief and took one to level 15. It is a fun class, but requires a lot of tactics and skills micro-management to get the most out of it. If you are in a group, you can get away with some mistakes, mis-timed rolls, wrong positioning at the wrong time, etc. If playing solo, you make a mistake or 2, and you are very quickly fighting for your life since you are too squishy to be surrounded by mobs in melee range.
I switched to Ranger, mainly for solo survivability, while I learn more about the game world. My Ranger is now level 30, and enjoying it to bits. I plan to go back to the Thief after I explore more of the world.
Take in to consideration this MMO has no trinity . There is utility/healing in pretty much any profession. I actually dabbled in each profession and the main 3 I felt most attuned to were Warrior, Engineer (jump shot FTW), and Necromancer (as close to my GW1 blood style as can happen w/o dual classing). You may find others you like …but dabble a bit … this isnt about endgame its about the journey… enjoy it

I will play mostly alone with the exception of maybe a group of one or two with me at max.

You can purchase more slots with enough in-game gold. 5 is a good amount to start off with IMO. Could be more or less, but is enough to try out a few characters. By level 7 you open up weapon swapping which is a great step up in the play of any profession.
If you like dual wielding I’d try Thief, Warrior or Guardian.
Rangers can also dual wield melee but it works a hair different as some melee weapons are thrown as mid-ranged weapons (axes).
You have 5 slots so I think the more important question is what 3 classes do you really not want to play.
If you prefer dual wield and bursty damage with no ramp up, Engineer, Ranger, Necromancer, Mesmer should be off the table. Mesmer has some burst but it is awkward at best, Ranger has a lot of DPS and you can ramp that DPS up in short burst but you never really get a hard hitting ability. Plus Sword main hand is either love it or hate it. Engineer and Necromancer just don’t burst in a normal way if at all.
Elementalist with Dagger/Dagger is a good choice. Warrior Axe/Axe + Rifle is a great choice. Guardian Sword/Focus + Scepter/Shield is a good choice though not traditional dual wielding. Thief with any setup is great as well for what you want.
I would make those 4 and then save that last slot as a just in case for trying the other 4 out.

Awesome feedback from all, thanks for all the replies.
