Hey all,

I’m maining a mesmer for some time . Yet I’m lacking a bit of fun I used to have with that class .

Maybe you can help me out a bit by getting things right or dispelling my doubts.

I want to play a profession that

- is easy to play (dagger ele or engi with complicate rotations are not my thing .)
- deals a lot of damage and can wipe multiple foes easily (I’m a passionate open world player)
- doesn’t require me to change my (ascended) gear , cause the meta fractal build requires me to choose diff stats from the meta raid build or vice versa.
- isn’t too squishy and got decent sustain
- has a perma swiftness buff ; anything else is a bit annoying in OW

Now given that , every class got a bit of a negative aspect . Maybe you can help me out here ?

- thief : pretty fun to play, but the fact thief only got a weak 900 range weapon for OW discourages me a bit from playing . Also I loved daggers pretty much , now staff seems to be meta

- ranger : got the problem that’s it’s necessary to switch gear when playing fractals AND dungeons . Pretty annoying . And way to expensive .

- necro: also loved to play power necro , now that condi seems to be meta anywhere , that profession lost much of its fun to me

- guard : swiftness problem; and overall a bit boring to play.

- ele and engi : complicate skill rotations don’t make these classes really Keen to me.

Rev : don’t like the profession overall . Weird ranged weapon also

Maybe someone had a similar kind of crisis and can help me out ?

Elementalist really isn’t that hard when you get the hang of it. I think you should still try it.

Go to metabattle and check out all the professions. What you will find is different gear (typically, at least aspects of gear like runes) and builds for different game modes. Your requirement “doesn’t require me to change my (ascended) gear , cause the meta fractal build requires me to choose diff stats from the meta raid build or vice versa.” is too limiting. Rather than changing your profession, I’d take a look first at your requirements first, then revisit the question of professions. Are you sure you want massive amounts of AR in open world PvE?

Edit: And, after you review your requirements, I’d pick ranger.

Hmmm .. currently got a full zerk asc medium armor. If Im right, I’d either have to change the stats of it or craft a new armor that fits the requirements for raids. Both doesnt seem like an attractive option to me.

Dire stats, burn elementalist with scepter warhorn is what I use to solo anything and everything. I use the superior rune of undead, which is also an easy to acquire/cheap rune. I solo dungeon runs in most paths, solo champions, and even tank super bosses. Not only are you super tanky, but you are flexible to healing, deal nasty burst conditions in an aoe fashion, and can even CC if necessary. There isn’t any situation he isn’t built for, and I most enjoy tanking the commanders in dragons stand while dishing out major burns. Fire-Earth-Tempest are my specializations. I can specify everything else if you are interested.

PS- Yes the damage is quite bursty even for conditions, tempest is nasty strong

Join the noble and awesome ranks of Warrior!

*Different feel than mage-feel of mesmer; much more direct combat
*Not squishy – the recent change to Adrenal Health has given the Warrior a huge sustain boost
*Burst and Primal Burst are effective, and straight forward.
*Quick weapon swapping gives you options w/o being overwhelming like ele attunements (my personal opinion; I can’t handle ele attunement swap)
*Discipline trait line gives you that speed buff you’re after (not swiftness, but 25% isn’t bad)
*Lots of viable weapons to mix-n-match so you can really personalize your combat.
*If you’re interested in raiding, PS Warriors are always in demand.

I spent 3 years maining a Guard, never truly happy with any build I tried. When I switched to Warrior a few months ago I started having so much more fun in PvE. Classically it’s not the type of profession that’d interest me, but now I don’t want to play anything else.

A bit off topic, but what’s the alternative to having agony resistance in ascended gear? I thought the only other thing was +/- wvw guard damage or something, which always seemed fairly ignorable.

I would also suggest ranger btw, for swiftness uptime, sustain, and ease of play. But then I’ve always been an avid believer in ignoring metabattle where gear optimisation for different pve content is concerned.

Btw did I miss it or did you gloss over warrior as an option?

Nope, I noticed it too, nothing about warrior.

EW pretty much hit it right on the nail. It sounds like the warrior profession would be the right fit for you. You’d have a few blast finishers (including throwing down a banner) so you can stack up quite a bit of might. Not to mention one of your traits allow you to grant other players might, so you can dish out damage while simultaneously supporting your teammates. Warriors are pretty robust, as long as you don’t play carelessly.

I dont mean to hijack your thread op but I have a question for these guys, do you think warrior would be for me? I like versatility, I love nearly all of my weapons being effective and not outmatched by others, I like switching builds and weapons kind of often. I also like a mix of ranged and melee depending on my mood, I enjoy being in groups. I also like flashy classes.

I recently got my guardian to 80 but realized to many weapons feel to slow for me, its just not fun plus the build varity feels limited, im currently trying a revenant and they are fun but I hear allot of negative things about it like very boring rotations and stuff for pve, and you end up with very few builds? I dont know if its true but you do hear it quite a bit.

I am looking for a second class besides elementalist right now, anyways thanks for reading my question all!

I’m having fun experimenting with my warrior – going from shout build to phalanx to knockback (the idea of being a truck is fun, but I haven’t experimented with it much). I haven’t played as a revenant so I can’t give any advice, but since you like having a class that’s flashy and has effective weapons, I might recommend engineer. Flashy because you can explode turrets, bombs, and throw out grenades (ASPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE). You have kits which essentially serve as your secondary, tertiary, and quad-iary weapons which are as effective as you make them. I’m not sure how flexible engineers are as a class but they can hold their own in PvE and fractals.

You could always make your own thread asking for tips. I’m pretty sure you’ll get a response without needing to borrow someone’s thread <3

@OP
Despite your comment about the Rev, it’s probably the one that matches your criteria best. What is it you don’t like about it?

@Ryou
It’s probably best to start your own thread if you’re asking a fairly involved question that isn’t related to the original topic. It’s hard to have 2 simultaneous conversations on a forum and kinda annoying for the OP.

I’ve tried out a revenant.. I don’t really get along with the rev’s mechanics of keeping the aspects up and switching legendaries. And I’m not too much into heavy armor classes. That’s why I probs left out warrior too.

Could anyone maybe tell me a “solution” for playing a ranger? I mean, do I really have to get a second ascended armor at the cost of hundreds of gold to play raids effectively or whatever? Or isnt it possible to play a zerk druid in raids too? OR use an exotic version of the armor for the healing stats?
It’s pretty annoying raids are somewhat “hard to access”

Also, what about thiefs? Are they really that squishy ? As far as MB goes, the raid and fractal build are pretty much the same for DD. What about playing a thief in OW tho? I always fear if I*’d decide for the thief I’d play a really squishy profession that requires me to really master the class if I want to survive in (HoT) OW.

About Eles.. I always fear (if I’m NOT playing with staff) the skill rotations are super complicated and I’ll always stick to staff instead and get bored to hell at a point. I also like to switch “between” a strong ranged and strong melee weapon. Does dagger really feel “melee”-ish with the ele?

The Warrior’s definitely got the versatility, weapon effectiveness, and build/weapon swapping. I also like to switch builds up, and experiment w/ weapon combos… The difference for me between my warrior and guardian in this aspect is that with the guardian I just wasn’t satisfied for long with any build I made… but with the warrior it’s more that I love the build I’m using but every few weeks I have a ‘great idea’ for something new and get even more excited.

I’ll say that I don’t think it has the flashiness you seek. For me the warrior is about style over flare. Whirling around your enemy with a blur of axes, laying down a carpet of flames w/ Scorched Earth, sending out a shockwave with your hammer hitting in a cone the oncoming horde of mobs and crippling them. There’s this visceral feel of “that’s cool” w/o being flashy.

Last, I enjoy the ranged weapons, but they definitely feel slow. Effective, but slow. There’s a recent brief thread in the warrior sub-forums talking about the differences and usefulness of the bow and rifle.

Also, what about thiefs? Are they really that squishy ? As far as MB goes, the raid and fractal build are pretty much the same for DD. What about playing a thief in OW tho? Mikei the Mighty on Youtube has a recent video up about a very, very simple raid build for the Daredevil/Thief. That might give you some of the information you’re seeking, though indirectly because it’s raid-focused instead of the broader HoT focused.

If you’re going to want to stick with light gear then your only choices are Power Necro and Ele. Ele can be a glass cannon, complicated major support and combo maniac (staff) or…

About a year ago Wooden Potatoes created a “Medic Ele” build that can’t kill squat but:

“Want to pull off some INSANE rezes and experience 4,500+ armour, 53% damage reduction, being impossible to crit with invulns to boot? Watch on!”

It’s a lot of fun, if nothing else:

Also, highlighting many of the ‘cons’ to each build will only contribute to why you don’t like a certain class. I have 1 or 2 of each class except the elementalist.

Only reason the ele got the damper on me was after they did that visual patch that dumbed down all the aesthetics of the class, such as Fire Shield, Frost Aura and other such outputs.

But simply looking at what each particular class does best will better help get you liking one or more classes. Some can get boring, but if you’re afraid to experiment with classes, then it’ll only get even more bland.

Yes I’m a vet, yes I’m salty. Problem?
