I’m playing GW2 for half a year now and want to bring my friend into the game, but in the location I live in, a brand-new copy of the game is horribly over-priced due to currency convertion. So I’ve been looking for used-accounts on Ebay, and was trying to find some other resource for my searches, but now it comes to my mind – what is Anet’s policy on such actions? Are such things forbidden/bannable?

Account-sharing is against the ToS.

Now, buying an old account may count as account sharing.
However, I don’t know if Anet will ban you or if it’s something they don’t care that much about, as long as only 1 player at a time uses the account.

Buying accounts is against ToS I’m pretty sure, so would not recommend. Can you maybe just wait for a sale and buy the game from the website? It’d be a lot less risky.

I believe it’s not allowed and probably falls under the real money trading policy. They don’t allow players to buy gold outside of the official gemstore/gemcards conversion and this would be the same thing: spending real money on the game through a 3rd party. On top of that I believe you agree to the terms that you will be the only person that uses the account when you make one. If they find out then I’m pretty sure the account will be permanently banned. Perhaps you can read through the terms of service to see if something there mentions it but I’m pretty sure you are going to end up with the same conclusion.

The problem comes if/when the original owner tries to take the account back. Contested accounts get permanantly banned.

Used accounts are never actually yours. Any time the real account owner wants it back he can get it back by contacting support, saying it was hacked and giving them the details like serial number, credit card, etc. Then the buyer of the used account is permanently locked out and the owner gets everything you worked for.

Even if that doesn’t happen, if you ever need to prove ownership for any other reason, such as getting hacked, you can’t. And again you lose the account.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Allright, I appreciate the response. On the final note – what’s the discounted price of GW2 key, the one that was mentioned in the comments?

They’ve been having sales (once every month or every couple of months) where the basic GW2 game costs $10 (US). You’d buy it directly from GW2.

You cannot legitimately transfer an account to another player. Buying an old account is HUGELY risky and completely unsupported. Pretty sure if Support can verify the account has been “transferred” they would likely perma-ban it.

That being said, I don’t think there is anything wrong with purchasing an account using your friends email address. They would get the activation key and links to download the software (tho you can log in here with the new account and download from this site as well). As long as the account is not registered to another player, I don’t think it really matters who purchases it, but keep in mind that the verification process when you contact support MAY require the credit card number used for the original purchase (I don’t think that would be needed if the activation key is available to verify with).
