Q:

What is a hunter? I keep hearing people use the term.

Is it a new class in an upcoming expansion? :S

No. It’s people coming from other games referring to this game’s ranger. I’ve seen people refer to necromancers as warlocks too. Some people just don’t care to learn the different terminology of the game even if it’s smashed in their face.

People who are ex-WoW players like to use WoW terms for describing MMOs. Their version of Ranger was called the Hunter. So when you get a new person here after leaving WoW, they want to know how Ranger is similar to Hunter and how it is different. But after that point, some people are just lazy and will continue to call Ranger by the wrong name under the assumption that everything somehow knows WoW lingo.

We are Test Group F. (Don’t ask about what happened to the previous Test Groups.)

Yeah i think its a term from ‘the game that shall not be named’ for what the ranger class was there. I come from aion most recently and i occasionally forget and call my thief an assassin (tho to be fair, it was an assassin in gw1 as well). The other day i actually referred to my guardian as a templar and felt really dumb…

2 possibilities:

1) They mean the Ranger profession and have gotten the name mixed up with a similar class from WoW (and maybe some other games?). Same way a lot of people call the Trading Post the Auction House even though there are no auctions.

2) They mean the Huntsman crafting profession and have gotten the name wrong.

You can usually work it out from the context. If not just ask which they mean.

If this is not passive aggressively rhetorical, it is most likely a Ranger (without having adequate context in which you are hearing/seeing it to come to another conclusion). Other games use that word to refer to “the one who mostly uses a bow and maybe has a pet too” class.

In a handful of servers of Perfect World International, the community as a whole used terminology used in a completely different version of Perfect World. For years. And they still do.

Fair point. I still believe it’s rather ignorant/lazy to not learn the new terminology of a game you’re playing, and instead use that which is not of the game or series. Just an opinion, nothing more. It would help limit the confusion of people like the OP here. Not everyone came to this game from WoW or some other specific MMO, so there really is no logical reason to use those terms over the native ones.

Anyways, spread the word. Rangers are rangers, not hunters :P

Remembering it’s a ranger hasn’t been so hard for me. I have the hardest time remembering boons/conditions instead of buffs/debuffs even after a year of playing GW2. (Yes, a year, I was in all the BWE’s ). While the new terminology makes perfect sense, it’s not nearly so intuitive in meaning for me thanks to decades of PnP and LARP with advantages/disadvantages in character creation. Using two completely different words makes me all confused ’n stuff.

so, in a nutt shell (don’t know this is the correct english expression):

ranger = hunter
thief = rogue
elemtenalist = sorcers = wizards
AH (auction house) = TP
LA = Ogrimar (god! if people ever say this I’ll block that person forever)
Boon = buff
Swiftness = haste
Trait = build (can’t confirm this one)

I’d agree but I’ve caught myself using the wrong terms for things sometimes. I do it without even thinking about it and don’t always catch it, even after hitting post.

But when you do know I agree that you should use terminology from this game. Not everyone has played WoW, or PnP games, or anything remotely like GW2 but we have all played this game. (And if nothing else the wiki link is at the top of the page.)

So… wheres my sith inquisitor!

Yeah, not learning new game lingo can be annoying and its almost exclusively from WoW due to some thinking its the only mmorpg ever and the only good one (though have to admit so far the forums and map chats have been clean of such conversations which I have to say if a first for an mmo game of any sort for me)
