Q:
I know ANet likes to do special events at different holidays, but have never actively participated in one in GW1.
Whats the timeframe of those events? Do they start at one specific time and if you miss it you have to wait another year? Do they repeat for a few days every so often? Will the European servers get the event at different (global) times than us (I really hope so)
any information about how this (probably) will being handled is appreciated.
Thanks to the answers below I’ve put together the following list of statements:
confirmed means only in regards to halloween, these things could change for future events.
assumed information is just a projection from how ANet handled it in GW1. this is by no way certain.
thanks again for the answers

A:
In GW1 they usually had special items drop throughout the week with a 24 hour event on the holiday. Usually occurring every 2 to 3 hours in a town. They will post info in a week or so for Halloween if they run it like GW1
From my experience in GW1, they had the holiday events going on in the main towns and cities and such, and they lasted for maybe a week or so depending exactly which holiday it was. Not sure how they will do it with GW2 if at all? But nonetheless im sure whatever they may do will be pretty cool. I thoroughly enjoyed holiday events in GW1

yeah, I only played from time to time (to find all my chars had lots of happy anniversary gifts) and never experienced an event – but friends told me they were fun.
if the events lasted for a week (which sounds perfect, that should give everyone the opportunity to join), how did you personally start/participate in one? could you just start whenever you wanted (more or less solo) or were there specific times when the fun began?
thanks for the answers, I’ve updated my post to include your experiences.
Thanks to the answers below I’ve put together the following list of assumptions based on previous ANet behaviour for GW1:
- the holiday events (& changes to landscape etc) will last for about a week
- there will be ‘weekday’ events for the whole duration
- the main event on the holiday itself reoccurs regularly in a prominent location (like LA)
- infos about the event will soon start to trickle in (usually a week or so before the start of the event-week)
thanks again for the answers
I think you are jumping to conclusions. What happened in GW1 is only speculated to happen as well in GW2.
All we know for sure is that on the 22th a contend update themed round Halloween will start. They might do the finale day, but they might do it different. They promised an everchanging game and that elements of that will be included in the Halloween update. So conlcuding something like that it will last for a week or that there will be a final week is not correct imo. best is to leave it open cause we just don’t know what really is going to happen.
the 22th the update comes out and then we will get more information. Untill then all we really know is: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/events/halloween-2012
What is striking is the evolving world chapter at the bottom, meaning that in the same update some permanent changes are implemented like the tournament option in PvP. So some parts of the 22th update will be temporary (prolly till november the 3th or so) but others will stay according to this.
From the website linked by mercury:
“Be prepared for an epic adventure in four acts starting October 22 and running until October 31.”
So we know the exact timeframe.

Well, that is a shame …
1 Nov (Thurs) is a bank holiday here where I live and I am taking the the Friday off work as well. Would have been nice to play the event during the time off …

Also, in an interview (will try to find link), they (Colin) said to keep an eye specifically on Oct. 28th.
Heres the link (and the main (?) thread they want us to discuss Halloween in).
Someone else posted it already :
Its really good.
Specifically:
Colin Johanson: News on Halloween will be coming shortly! And if your readers are planning ahead, they should make sure in particular to save Sunday, October 28th on their calendar in particular for a very special mid-day (Pacific Time) event. More details to come, in game, as the date approaches…

I know there’s no definitive answer out there yet, that’s why I highlighted the word assumptions
still, it’s the same company, holding to the same standards, therefore it is possible or even likely they’ll stick to what they know works well in the predecessor.
I’ll reformat the main post to show which parts are assumptions and which are confirmed for at least the halloween event.
@skullmount: thanks for the information and links, I’ll include it.
